I just have Realtek onboard audio. I have a 970 gtx card and wanted to know more about it's audio feature. First is it better than onboard? Is there some way I can use that to output to my headphones or is it for hdmi output to my TV only? If so, what would be the best way to make use of that...use TV optical out to my HP's DAC? It has optical input. If that's the case then my last question is would that give me virtual surround? How good is virtual surround compared to the software my Realtek onboard chip has in it?

Basically I'm wanting the best audio experience but my rig has no option for an actual audio card. I also plan to play VR games whenever the Rift is available...how will the audio work for that, would it use the Nvidia cards output?

AFAIK it's only for HDMI or Display Ports
it goes straight to TV or home theatre system, as long as they have HDMI or Display Port input, then that receiver will decode the digital audio to the speakers
