Tried to research this but didn't really come up with anything. It's a simple question i believe. Is the "clean install" option that they implemented on the drivers a few versions back as affective as something like driver cleaner and if not what exactly is it's purpose then?

It's not as effective. It basically just overwrites things like any profiles that you may have created.

However, now I use it when I install new drivers. So, I do this: I delete "C:\NVIDIA", then I uninstall everything from the Programs and Features control panel, then I boot into Safe Mode and run Driver Sweeper, and then go back in to Windows and install the driver with the Clean Install option enabled.

This is a fresh windows install off about 2 months or so and i went and downloaded driver sweeper again but every time i load it, it says it needs updated, then after updating it says the program needs to restart so i click "ok" and I get an error message. From the looks on there forum i'm not the only one with this issue and i see alot of people talking about spyware within the new versions of driver sweeper. I would hope this to not be true from guru3d but guess ill have to check if i get it fixed.

I'm definitely curious now. "Supposedly" downloaded the same version from guru3d a little bit ago with the above problem. Then uninstalled and cleaned it all out then reinstalled with the correct link you gave me and it's not even the same desktop icon..

Seems odd to say the least. It's ccleaner / malwarebytes time i suppose

1 quick question. Is there a reason why some of the driver sweeper things i have read say to ONLY uninstall the display and physx driver before booting into safe mode ect ect. Almost seems as if they are saying to not uninstall nvidia hd audio and nview but not sure why that would matter unless driver sweeper is just irreverent for those.

I honestly admit that I have no idea about Guru3D's version. However, I do remember being sternly told a month or 2 ago to stop using and linking to Guru3D's version, except I can't remember why. Although, now I have a good reason.

As far Driver Sweeper's options for NVIDIA's graphics cards, it only handles the display driver and PhysX.

Regarding the HD Audio driver: I never install it.

nView: I haven't seen nView since I had a 9800 GTX+.

Anyway, yeah: Driver Sweeper can only clean NVIDIA Chipset drivers, display drivers, and PhysX. Of course, these things must first be uninstalled first so that Driver Sweeper can do what it's supposed to do: it cleans up what's left behind.

Anyway, thanks again i think in squared away once again. I tried the new 270.51 beta drivers but as far as the benchmarks are concerned they are a downgrade from 265.58 WHQL for now. Hopefully they will be better on full release but they are more 5xx series oriented it seems from the notes.

Here's my policy:

1) Updating to newest drivers, where driver set isn't a major change: Install drivers by overwriting.
2) Updating to newest drivers, where the new driver set IS a major change, such as when the 2xx-series came out, OR going back to older drivers: Uninstall drivers, restart, then install the new drivers (or the older ones).
3) Switching from Forceware to Catalyst, or vice-versa: Do a safe-mode driver sweep.

These rules have served me absolutely flawlessly for about 6 years now.

Sometime in the step 2 situations I might I do 'clean installs', now that those are available, but those things always worked fine with regular uninstalls before.

IMHO, a good many people on OCN are WAAAAAY overly paranoid/obsessive about removing previous drivers.

I rather like having the last 12 versions or so forceware versions extracted in my C:\Nvidia folder, personally

The reason for deleting "C:\NVIDIA" is to prevent Windows from automatically installing what it finds in there upon rebooting after uninstalling the current driver.
