I do like Jazz. I play Trombone and used to be in a Jazz band as well as a Dixieland combo. I have not played in some years though. I may start playing again if I am able to make the time for it. I even played in the Kennedy Center back in my High School days...that was fun.

Ooooooh! In, please!

I got my first CD player as a Christmas gift in 1990. I also got my first jazz album that day -- Erroll Garner's Concert by the Sea. A few days later, I went down to the local Best Buy to look for another jazz album, and walked out with Miles Davis's Kind of Blue. I've been hooked ever since.

Do you play instruments for that or is it purely theoretical studies? We don't have those studies in the Netherlands, looks like fun

I'm actually a saxophone player. The degree has a heavy emphasis on performance. With any luck, I'll be studying with Bob Mintzer next year!

Woot, I played a lot of his tunes previous years. iIRC it was called 15 easy Jazz etudes and then there was one for intermediate jazz and funk. I've also played 3 books of Snidero. I'm practising improvising now though over the Aebersold tracks (Maiden Voyage).

I'm an alto sax player. Do you have any tips on improvising and getting a better sound?

I got good at improve by listening to improve....a lot of improv. First copy it and then make your own following the basic essentials... you know key, tempo, and style

practice make the best sound....because your embrasure becomes stronger and then you can concentrate on refining your sound.....

also..how's your Vibrato?? swing is the same just not as quick. Bending the notes with your embrasure

My music teacher tells me that I use too much vibrato and bending. He keeps on telling me that I need to play more straight.

I'm listening to improvs a lot too but I can't play what I think if you know what I mean. I'm having a hard time translating what's in my head to notes. I'm practicing chord progressions now.

My setup is:

Dont focus so much on jazz music. try some scales. but molodic (sp?) minor and stuff like that. Also are u using a leather ligature? Maybe a plastic mouthpiece would suit your style better. Its a bit harder to bend notes on it. I cant for the life of me remember the model number of my selmer sax but it wasn't cheap lol

Tho i did start off with a pawn shop $300 alto that i still play better then my high dollar selmer.
