So, I decide to remove my heat spreader off of my 2x4 set of OCZ Reaper DDR2 1066. I just needed a little more room to fit my 2nd fan on my CPU heatsink.

1st stick pulls off the heat spreader just fine and the 2nd one had a chip stick to the heat spreader

Limited Lifetime Warranty??? LOL!

Can't I just put a binder clip on it and stick the chip back on there?

This has nothing to do with OCZ specifically. Many memory manufacturers use a semipermanent adhesive to join the memory to heatspreaders.

The only way to get the chip back on is to try to reflow the solder. Did it break off right at the solder points?

Thanks guys. I did research it and I knew it would potentially have this consequence. Yes, it is PEBKAC! America is a finger pointing country, so I pointed my finger at the company who chose to make their heat spreader so hard to pull off.

It is a lost cause. Some broke at the solder points while others pulled right off the chip and are stuck to the circuit board.

I just wanted you to laugh at my foolish decision. I should have stopped after I pulled the spreader off the 1st chip. That was all I really needed to get the fan in. I decided to take it a step further, so the 2nd chips spreader did not overlap the fan. Now I have plenty of room! Wish I could barter and get some decent, used, DDR2 on here. Not quite able yet.

You can BUY with any amount of rep I believe. At least that used to be the rule

Nice!!!!

This is quite the dilema because my goal was to wait for AM3+ boards to come out with more selection. I was going to replace my board, and then put my current board, memory, and a 7750 BE in my girlfriend's computer.

I am a little cash strapped at the moment, especially with the threat of a government shut down. It will halt most of my mortgages I am processing.

DRAMA! Thanks for reading though. I bet a few of you laughed at my blunder.

By removing the heatspreaders in the first place, you consented to the risk of ripping off a RAM chip.
Your loss.

What were you going to do with the heatspreaders anyway.... most heatspreaders are fine as they are because RAM doesn't generate a lot of heat.

They are tall and bulky. I was only able to install 1 fan on my CPU heatsink because of these heat spreaders. I even had them in slot 3 and 4, but the fan would still not fit. The one fan I did have on the cpu heatsink was only pulling air, and then blowing it out my exhaust.

I needed my second fan to push air through the heatsink (push/pull). I also wanted to move the fan down so it would blow a little air over my mosfets.

My mosfet heatsinks should be here tomorrow, finally. I will just order 2 new sticks of memory or find a deal on here.

Get it now?

EDIT: This cpu heatsink was for my Sandy Bridge build. It all fit perfectly, but I sold the cpu and memory. (Returned the board when recall hit)

This is why you need to use a heat gun to get those things off... e-e Or special order ram without heatspreaders

It's like if I try to remove the T1 heatsinks out of my HyperX's.

Senseless. And I'd risk ripping apart one of the precious (and super expensive) MNH-E Hypers that are packed under them :3

Well, cope with it.

I'd try to bake the RAM stick though, might work

I see what's up there then.... really sucks you ripped your RAM out, but you should have known of the risk.

OCZ's DDR2 was actually really good. Only with DDR3 did they go downhill.

My OCZ DDR3 was epic... memory is memory. You just gotta buy the right kit.

I already pulled both of the heat spreaders off. Can I bake my memory chip back onto my stick? hahahaha!

XD.... will you quit rubbing it in. Did you see where I said I knew it could happen? Now, I have to admit, I also knew that heating them up might have made it easier to pull the heat spreaders off. I chose not too. I had 3 choices right now... today... A blow dryer, a skillet, or my oven. lol WHen I got the first one off, I thought the 2nd would be a sinch. NO!

I just ordered some new sticks. Crucial XM2. I see some people volting them up to 2.1 and getting their timings down to 4.

I'm pretty sure even a blow dryer would work pretty well here

Hold it in front, leave it there for 10 minutes, voila?

It's not going to be as good as a heatgun but I suppose it'd be better than nothing

True, but for the most part OCZ DDR3 memory sucks. I loved my pair of OCZ DDR2 reapers.

I liked them too. I wonder why there is only 4 options for OCZ memory on Newegg though.

They're out of the memory business
