Odd smell after installing new fan

I just installed an SilenX IXP-76-18 iXtrema Pro fan onto my TRUE and bumped it up to a fairly reasonable 3.6GHz at 70 degrees. And OMG is this thing quiet! Goodbye Ultra Kaze. Nice knowing you. (I'd rather have 3.6GHz and quiet than 4GHz and lose my hearing.)

But after a couple of hours I noticed a strange smell in my room. I can't be sure if it's an electrical smell or an oil type of smell. It's something along those lines, anyway. I don't really smell it coming directly from the computer, but I notice it in the room. Is this just normal for this new fan and will go away in a day or so, or am I burning something? (I don't see anything burning.)

Seems like a new electrical smell to me. The oil or whatever lubricant in the fan motor is now heating up for the first time, give it a day it should disappear.
Why would you use a SilenX fan, ever? They're the worst of the worst in all respects. As for your problem, that burning smell is most likely the bearing or motor wearing down; the only smell I've ever picked up from a fan is something like the smell of a new blender, or anything with an impeller and a motor, really, but it never permeates the room like you describe.
CHECK THE SilenX!!!!!! THOSE THINGS ARE HORRID! I bought one and it caught on FIRE!

That's sort of what it reminds me of, but I just didn't remember smelling it while installing other fans. Maybe I need to run memtest on my brain...

Got a better idea? I'd never heard of them before, and it seemed like a very good balance between noise and airflow/static pressure. So far it's living up to that. ... And no, it doesn't seem to be on fire, but I'd rather not have that sort of thing happen.

I had assumed that since you'd been in this section plenty before, you'd have seen the past posts about SilenX fans, or at least looked at user reviews where the fans were either MUCH louder than rated (they usually are), push much less air than rated (sometimes), and end up dying after a short period (common, actually more common than Slipstreams dying). As for having a better idea, well, that's an easy one; send it back, get an S-Flex F, and don't look back.
I'll never understand why those SilenXes cost so much, either, honestly...

Maybe I got the one good one. We'll see in a day or two, I suppose.

And I haven't been on OCN for months until recently....
I think I found the problem, one of my OTHER case fans in front of the box has stopped spinning for some reason. False alarm I suppose. But now I have to replace that...
S-flex are very good and so are typhoons(better for heatsinks and radiators). I have decided to call up companies to see when typhoons are going to be sold again(been months since Scythe replaced them), so its going to be a new batch! It is due around end of this year or beginning of next.
I'm not going to repeat what everyone else said, but SilenX is a horrible fan.
If you want some other quiet but still good fan, get a fan from Noctua (if you dont mind the awful color that is). I'd suggest the Noctua NF-P12-1300 which is also the fan Noctua uses on their Noctua NH-U12P cooler. It has some kind of technology which makes it very quiet but still able to push alot of air.

That's all marketing fluff. On his TRUE, Noctuas would get choked and performance would decrease.

The SilenX needs to go immediately.

Well the smell is gone. It was that last Slipstream in my case that I forgot about and decided to croak. I'm surprised it lasted so long.
