Source - The AMD How To Thread

Assumes you have no instance of AB, aka afterburner installed previously. If you do have AB installed previously, uninstall it or delete the folder. Also, it is generally a good idea to uninstall AB before any new driver install when you are crossfired. AB will automatically run, even when run at windows start is disabled, and when it does and it tries to fool with clocks you will BSOD with a 07E code.**

Run afterburner install. At this point, if you choose default install directory, there will incur security issues later on, just keep that in mind. I would recommend you install it in another folder/drive.

After install completes, do not check the option to start afterburner. If you are crossfired follow A- below to disable ULPS if you are using Unofficial Overclock Method (UOM) or , you can skip this portion if you are using Official Overclock Method (-xcl), however be warned that Afterburner will not be able to see your sleeping cards if you have ULPS enabled. Thus it's probably a good idea to disable ULPS anyways.

A- Disabling ULPS

Open regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This key 4D36E968, under CurrentControlSet is the only folder you need to access. You can ignore the others, so don't search for it just traverse directly to said folder. It's time to disable ULPS, or ultra low power savings. Inside the folder you will find more folders, 0000/0001/0002/etc so on and on.

Open each folder and double click on EnableULPS and change to 0. You do not need to change any other key, or any keys that look similar, just change EnableULPS. Close regedit. End of A-

At this point if you installed into default directory, you will have a security issue. Open file manager, go to where you installed afterburner and right click on MSIAfterburner.cfg and go to security, click edit, add yourself and give yourself full control, click ok.

Now go back and open MSIAfterburner.cfg in notepad.

Scroll to bottom and change this:

[ATIADLHAL]
UnofficialOverclockingEULA =
UnofficialOverclockingMode= 0

to this:

[ATIADLHAL]
UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
UnofficialOverclockingMode= 1

**Note on the mode setting. Some new games are causing clock conflicts with Powerplay creating flickering on the desktop. You can avoid this by choosing 2, instead of 1. I am running with Powerplay off. Look Mom, no flickering. Refer to the bottom of Post 2 (in source 'The AMD How To Thread" ) for more info on this.**

Close and save MSIAfterburner.cfg. At this point download the file from the link above for AMD Clock Control files and run it. Do not reboot.

Now you can run afterburner for the first time. Afterburner will analyze the gpu asic and ask to reboot when ready. Choose yes to reboot. After reboot, you will have afterburner installed, you can then unlock voltage control and monitoring, etc. Happy overclocking.

Just use /wi4,30,8d,10 for 100mv. The offset is 6.25 mv in hexademical. So on decimal is :16*6.25=100 mv. For 50mv you need 8. For 200mv you need 20( 20=32 on dec. So 32 * 6.25=200mv)

The easy way to do changes:

Create a txt on desktop. Write
CD C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner
MSIAfterburner.exe /wi4,30,8d,10

and then save as .bat file. Eveyrtime you start this bat file msi will start with +100mv

For 50mv: 8
For 100mv:10
For 125mv:14
For 150mv:18
For 175mv:1C
For 200mv:20

I wouldn't go over this point because
1)You are close to leave the sweet spot of the ref pcb vrms efficiency
2)These commands add 200mv on top of the 100mv offset through AB gui.That means 300mv

Having a big problem with my PC. So the past few days I've been getting random hard crashes while playing Fallout and only Fallout. Other games played just fine so i figured it was a mod conflict or something. But today I got a hard crash and restarted my PC.

I got a BSoD on boot, immediately after the Windows startup screen. I booted into safemode and did a clean uninstall and reinstall of both 14.9 and Omega drivers but the same thing happens. You might remember me mentioning a different bug with Omega drivers a few months ago, so I figured that I would just reinstall Windows and see if that would help.

Fast forward an hour and I got a new installation of Windows 7 and all my essential drivers. Then I installed Omega drivers and got a BSoD when rebooting. Clean uninstall and 14.9, same problem.

The BSoD says atikmdag and some other stuff, but it's too quick to read. I don't think it's a hardware issue because my cards were both working fine in all games and benchmarks besides Fallout. The PC also runs fine without AMD drivers installed Any idea of what to troubleshoot next? And how can I test if it's my videocard(s) if I can't even boot into Windows? I will try booting with just one GPU at a time but I don't think it will work.

There's a setting in bios about not instantly rebooting on crash that gives you time to read usually OR program like "who crashed" will read your dumps and give you the BSOD number to check against the overclocking BSOD list.

There's probably a newer one, but:
BSOD codes for overclocking
0x101 = increase vcore
0x124 = increase/decrease vcore or QPI/VTT...have to test to see which one it is
0x0A = unstable RAM/IMC, increase QPI first, if that doesn't work increase vcore
0x1E = increase vcore
0x3B = increase vcore
0x3D = increase vcore
0xD1 = QPI/VTT, increase/decrease as necessary
0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency or uncore multi unstable, increase RAM voltage or adjust QPI/VTT, or lower uncore if you're higher than 2x
0x109 = Not enough or too Much memory voltage
0x116 = Low IOH (NB) voltage, GPU issue (most common when running multi-GPU/overclocking GPU)
0x7E = Corrupted OS file, possibly from overclocking. Run sfc /scannow and chkdsk /r

OK, my PC booted up today and I did a clean install of 14.9 drivers and it's working. I tried out the new MSI AB but I'm having an issue with it. Event though I click the setting to sync my two GPUs I have to manually change the clocks for each one individually. Also I can't increase the power limit. Even though I move the slider up and hit OK, it just resets itself to zero. I have unofficial overclocking mode on.

Also TY Arizonian, that will be helpful if I have that problem again in the future.

Many UltraHD/4K monitors can achieve a 60 Hz refresh rate using a tiled display configuration. AMD Eyefinity technology can be leverage to support these tiled displays by making two 2Kx2K tiles act as one 4Kx2K monitor. AMD has taken steps to make this easy for end users by providing an Automatic AMD Eyefinity Configuration features. This feature allows an automatic "plug and play" configuration of supported UltraHD/4K tiled displays when a DisplayPort cable is connected.

When a user hotplugs a tiled 4K monitor (such as the Sharp PN-K321 or Asus PQ321Q), a 2x1 display group will be automatically created and the two tiles will be combined to act as one monitor. This configuration will be remembered and re-enabled when the display is unplugged or the system is rebooted. It is also possible to manually disable the display group in CCC, and have the two tiles act as independent monitors. It should be noted that once the display group is manually disabled, it can no longer be automatically configured as a tiled display via the Automatic AMD Eyefinity Configuration feature.

Additionally, AMD is supporting a new industry standard for tiled displays in VESA DisplayID v1.3. The "Tiled Display Topology Data Block" describes additional display capabilities that can be leveraged to enable the plug and play experience with tiled displays. Tiled displays supporting this data block can be supported by the Automatic AMD Eyefinity Configuration with no driver update required.

There’s optimization, and then there’s Mantle. Games enabled with Mantle speak the language of the Graphics Core Next architecture to unlock revolutionary performance and image quality. It’s a game-changing innovation developed by AMD.

The four core principles of AMD’s Mantle

Essential principle #1: Helping developers

Quote:

In short, Mantle is a new and better way to bring the code developers are already writing for next-generation consoles to life on the PC. It achieves this by being similar to, and often compatible with, the code they are already writing for those platforms. The ultimate goal of Mantle is to give gamers the ultimate performance in compatible games, and doing that in such a way that developers are free to put forth whatever effort is required to ensure optimal performance for competing platforms.

Source

Quote:

AMD claims that Mantle can enable up to nine times the number of draw calls issued from the CPU compared to existing APIs. Draw calls are often a bottleneck to graphics performance, with GPUs sometimes able to process more than CPUs can issue, so this can only be a good thing.

Mantle particularly interesting is of course the fact that AMD has GCN hardware in all the new consoles. While the similarities between Mantle and the console APIs remains an unknown, cross-platform developers are already becoming familiar with GCN at a lower level and optimising their code for it, theoretically making ports to PC much easier and more scalable. With this level of in-built support it's a strong bet Mantle will make some impact.

While there will naturally be an overhead for developers to include Mantle support, AMD has garnered support from a key partner, specifically DICE. A free update to Battlefield 4, due in December, will enable Mantle support in the game, potentially gracing AMD GPU users with a free and significant boost in performance. While the full ramifications of Mantle thus remain to be seen, you can expect more info, including partner announcements and demos, at AMD's developer summit in November.

With its compact design, this graphics card is perfect for standard ATX systems.

AMD Radeon R9 290X To Feature New AMD CrossFireX Technology

Where are CrossFire connectors?

The missing crossfire finger technology is called Sideport. This technology support the crossfire connection through the PCI-E Express rather than separate connectors. What does this mean? Goodbye Crossfire Bridge connectors.

AMD has added a hardware DMA engine (Direct Memory Access) in the AMD CrossFire compositing block. The video cards now have dual DMA engines. This new technology is only present in the R9 290X and R9 290. CrossFire has been simplified in the new series, and as such AMD was able to get frame pacing working.

DMA engines allow for direct access between the GPUs over the PCI-Express bus solely. AMD has said the video cards can saturate a PCIe 3.0 x16 bus bandwidth; 16GB/s bi-directional. There is no performance penalty for eliminating the external bridge. Sideport can improve scaling and efficiency between the GPUs, especially as you scale up to triple or quad cards.

May order two for my 3D/gaming hobbies. Maybe when the third party manufacturers start making higher-end variants.

Wasn't this thread already made a while ago? What'd I miss?

If the rumors are true I'll be ordering one tonight as soon as they go on sale, then actually reading some reviews to see if I should cancel my order or not

I got paid last night, so my budget can easily handle cross-fire 290x's. Depending on the price I might grab a second one from Newegg, but for now it's just the one from ShopBLT.

I'll probably just redo the thermal paste as I will be sitting on the stock cooler for a while since it's starting to get cold down here anyway.

Update:
I actually have had the card since Tuesday but having too much fun to post an update here. I got some time now so here goes.
Pics (Click to show)

Still using the stock cooler but I redid the TIM, around 2C lower under load but the fan has never went above 70% in anything. Not planning on doing water for this build, maybe on my next build. Runs great and I love the fact that I can get 4XSSAA in BF4 and stay above 50FPS at 1080p Ultra, the game looks so crispy!

Since the pre-order release was cancelled from originaly Oct 3, 2013 we had the Pre-order thread that had 80+ pages of speculation we've started the club fresh by members request.

Earlier today [H]ardForum posted: Source

Quote:

AMD is launching the Radeon R9 290X today. The R9 290X represents AMD's fastest single-GPU video card ever produced. It is priced to be less expensive than the GeForce GTX 780, but packs a punch on the level of GTX TITAN. We look at performance, the two BIOS mode options, and even some 4K gaming.

So we should start seeing reviews by early tomorrow morning while we sleep. Something I'll be missing out on and real orders are going live as well.

Guys, the 290 (blurred on one of the reviews) is right up there with the 290X. I am so tempted but my mind is telling me to wait.
