Introduction
################################################## #####
The GTX 580 is the most powerful and fastest single gpu in the world.
Which is why our club is devoted to constantly finding new ways of exploring and challenging every single aspect about our gtx 580s.
Currently i have established 4 big sections in which we try to compete, experience, share and inform considering our cards.

The first section concerns each members individual overclock both single/sli and features all the main and secondary data involved with every member´s oc, the OC Section.

The second section is all about our members benchmark results and all important subsidal data important for optimal determination of the 580 settings used , the Benchmark Section.

Thirdly, we try to appeal to the aesthetic side of our cards and rigs, which is why i have created a place in which all members can not only show stylish pictures of there 580 rigs but also vote and determine the top 5 pics every week, the Photo Section.

Lastly, we want to put some focus on the main purpose of the card, meaning the gamig aspect, here we gather every member´s top 5 favourite games, list them with the min-max fps and each members personal gameplay experience with their gtx 580, the Gaming
Section.

Entry Requirements
################################################## #####
Now that you have been informed about the club´s directions, I will explain the requirements mandetory to absolve in order to be accepted as member of this club and ecredited an entry and rank.

1.)
An entry to the OC Section demands a screenshot of:
Your overclocking tool with the applied OC, a text document with your OCN name and a run benchmark in the backround for stability proof reasons.
With that screenshot you need to post all the data exactly in the following example´s order:
[ch_skyline][evGA GTX 580 ][925MHZ/2850MHZ@1.15V][43C/66C][h2O]
http://www.overclock.net/14179756-post290.html

(Your name,vendor,model,OC(Core,Memory,Voltage),Load/Idle Temps,Cooling,Link of the Post)

Those are the mandetory format and data requirements necessary to be posted in combination with your screenshot.

2.)
An entry to the Benchmark Section demands
a screenshot of: a text document with your OCN name, the run benchmark, all gpu scores from the test visible, 1x instant of gpu-z and 3x instants of CPU-Z (cpu, memory and motherboard tabs opened).
One run with a single Benchmark out of the 4 offered will be sufficient for an entry.
Again you will have to post the screenshot in combination with the required data exactly in the following example´s format and lettering:

[ch_skyline][ GTX 580 Reference][925MHZ/2850MHZ@1.15V][43C/66C][26K/4.7GHZ][h2O]
Graphics Score: 3DMark11: P8765
Graphics Score: 3DMark Vantage: P34564
Heaven Benchmark: P1945
HWBOT Heaven Benchmark: X34545
http://www.overclock.net/14179756-post290.html
(Your name,model,OC(Core,Memory),Load/Idle Temps,CPU/Frequency,Cooling,Score,Link of the post)

3.)

An entry to Photo Section demands:
4 pictures of your rig in which 3 should be taken in a turned on and 1 in a turned off state, the name of your rig and the direct link to the uploaded site.

As upload sites I recommend:
www.imagebanana.com
www.photobucket.com

4.)

An entry to the Gaming Section demands:
A listing of your Top 5 most favourite Games, your Min-Max FPS for all of them, used driver, used graphical settings(AF,AA,Vsych etc),used OC/temps, and your personal gameplay experience with your 580.

Ranking Systems
################################################## #####
Our Club has a unique ranking system among its section leading members.
Every member of this club that is among the Top 10 of the O.C or Benchmark section will be ecredited to certain ranks with
the purpose to quickly be able to determine their achievments and honorary status in the club.
The Ranking can be observed in the Official Club Force.

Section Ranks:

Private: The Private includes the last 4 of the Top 10 of a section,
a trainee who's been doing a good job so far but the higher ups do not respect him yet.
He is determined to prove himself.

Sergeant: The Sergeant is considered the 6th & 5th place of the two sections, he is the direct superior of a Private and gives him orders.
Still, the Sergeant is craving to evolve and finally move up in the hierachy.

Lieutenant: The Lieutenant takes the 4th place, he is considered the Captain´s "assistent" and is devoted to serve him.
Nonetheless, he has great deal of authority and wants to just once function as Captain.

Captain:
The Captain occupies the 3rd place, he is arrogant, stubborn and proud.
He is the first commander of a Lieutenant and treats him like a dog.
The Captain has a great deal of field experience and has the job of motivating and drilling his inferiors.

Major: The Major occupies the 2nd place of the sections, he is superior to all ranks beneath him and free to command them at his will.He is responsible for the strategic aspect of the force.
The Major moved up so far through intelligence and knowledge.

General: He is the leader of the force and concludes all positive characteristics of his inferiors.
He has the field experience but is also highly intelligent considering the strategic aspect the force.
The General has achieved everything a section member could possibly want to achieve.
Take an example on him and honor him for his accomplishments.

The OC Section is ranked by:Higher Core > Lower Core, Higher Memory > Lower Memory.

The Benchmark Section is ranked by: Higher Benchmark Score > Lower Benchmark Score.

The Photo Section is ranked by: More votes > Less votes

Official GTX 580 OC Beginner´s Guide
################################################## #####
The most efficient and safe way that most overclockers do it is the following:

1.)Get a reliable Overclocking tool:
http://www.chip.de/downloads/MSI-Aft..._38526644.html

2.)Make sure you have installed overclocking friendly dirvers, currently that is 266. and 280.

3.)Raise only your Core Clock in intervalls of 15 MHZ and run a benchmark or stress test after every increase in order to determine the stability.

(You are leaving the Memory OC alone for now as it is only another instability factor, and because the Memory OC is unessential if not to say irrelevant for the OC performance anyway. At the end when you have a stable Core clock you can engage the Memory OC if you insist)
The Shader clock is linked to the Core and will be risen with it, so you don´t or better can´t touch that.
For stress testing:http://www.chip.de/downloads/3DMark-11_46061292.html

4.)At a certain point of repeating point 2 you will experience certain instabilities:artifacting(white/black stripes or squares, driver crashes, vast performance drops or screen freezing.

That will be an indicator for you to have reached your max OC under stock voltage and you will have the opportunity to either back the clocks down a bit until you do not experience any instabilities anymore and have a stable OC under stock voltage or raise the voltage in order to continue overclocking.
If so only raise the voltage very slightly though in order to to find the lowest possible voltage setting for your OC to be stable, that will give you optimal temps:)
Also after every voltage increase again run a benchmark or stress test and check if the instabilities are gone, if they do your current OC setting is stable and you can either proceed clocking higher or leave it if you are satisfied, if not you need to up the voltage as long as you do not experience any instabilities anymore.

5.)Always be sure to keep an eye on your temps, I would say 80C -90C is the max for an aircooled GTX 580, playing it safe of course.

Also play it safe with your voltages!

6.)Only keep the applied OC and voltages for the benchmark run and afterwords immediately return your OC to stock.

That is especially important to overclockers on air because this way you will only stress the card for a short period of time and won´t accidentally run it 24/7.
Also always have your fan at 100% while running the benchmark of course.

7.)If in the end everything is stable, you can now try to overclock the Memory.

Just like with the core proceed after the same pattern in intervalls of 50MHZ with testing after every increase:)
Memory will go much higher than the Core clock which is why your ups can be higher.
But be aware that the benefits in performance regarding memory overclocking are negligable.

That should about do it

1.)Overclocking Tools & Tweaks
Afterburner 2.1.0 Beta 5 (change voltage and clock speeds)

To unlock voltage, go to -> Settings and check [unlock voltage control]
Overclock to your hearts desire but pay attention to temperatures and use small increments.

2.)How To Unlock Fan Speed For EVGA GTX 580
Easily unlock the fan speed from 40%/80% min/max to 30%/100% (only for EVGA cards)

3.) NVIDIA BIOS Editor (NiBiTor) v6.0 Software Released!
http://www.mvktech.net
NiBiTor allows graphics card enthusiasts, or the hardcore overclockers to have full control over some advanced features and functionality found on firmware of supporting cards. And doing so users gain some extra performance, enable certain hidden features, tweaking memory latencies, provide extensive information, adapt bootup settings, changing fan speed options and/or get extra stability on their NVIDIA based graphics accelerators which will just give them that little extra value.
Use with caution!

4.)Fermi Bios Editor 1.5.5 with GTX 580 support now public!

This bios editor allows fan, voltage, and clock adjustment
Use with caution!

True.

Please clearly label your results.
Even though it is not 580 ..I think it could be benefitial to see how the 580 performs in comparision to it.

But for now I hope people with 580 Lightnings will gather and post their results/scores:)

1.)Ehm... not at all:p

2.)Great idea I will change the thread designation and OP so that every non ref 580 owner can post their results:D

MSI GTX 580 Lightning

Idles around 33-35C in an ambient of ~72F. Hits 900/2200 at 1.031v with a load temp of 73C on auto fan (this was in a higher ambient, probably around 80F or so, and with stock thermal paste). Also does 920/2200 at 1.056v (this is with MX4 thermal paste applied and the air conditioner installed, so the ambient is now around 72F).

I haven't touched the PLL (auxiliary) voltage or memory voltage, but if I did I could obviously go higher on the memory and probably core. I use 920/2200 for 24/7 usage and obviously Kombustor stresses it more than games, so it is usually a little quieter during typical gaming. All in all it's a great card hardware build quality wise, has triple overvoltage (core + PLL + memory) and it seems like MSI bins these chips pretty well on the Lightning.

I also use NCIX, but they have no stock, called them to see about getting 1 in for me & they have them on order but can't get any because of the strike.
I also live out in the boonies here & can't get courier delivery with the po box address.

Technically my current Lightning isn´t at 1 GHZ because I did not unpack it yet^^
My GA OC build is still in progress because I need some parts.

But my previous Lightning I had to send back because of a visual damage was at 1.02 GHZ.
Before I sent it back I just overclocked it because I didn´t wanna miss out on the fun even though the card was going away^^

I tested with Furmark and 3DMark Vantage.

At first I orientated and took advantage of this video:

08:35
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foCZWEa0GSU[/ame]

Then I modified and finetuned a little.

I was at 1,02 GHZ Core Clock
1910 MHZ Shader Clock
2240 MHZ Memory Clock

Voltages :
1.5volts on the core

I also individually tuned the Memory voltage as well but I can´t remember what the exact value was anymore.

Temps at full load where in the 67 degree region ...but I had the card just installed on the board without a case so 100% intake/exhaust efficiency:)
Idle was about 28 I think.
Fan on Auto

I hope my current Lightning will perform just as fine:D

Guys keep the results coming !
smile.gif

@Dopman: Nice results! but there is still a lot more in your card ...do you choose not to go higher or did you just not try yet?

Lightning SLI will be shredding for sure^^

I have experienced that you always stress the last bit out of your cards :haha:

The scores will be nice for sure.

This isn't official until an Editor deems it to warrant the official title. So please leave that part out of the title and the thread. Official means its approved by OCN staff, and at this point its not. So please keep the Official comment out.

If this thread grows, and you would like it to become official once it has grown, you can feel free to PM an editor of this section.
