old hard drive needed to select operating system on new hard drive?

should have posted this first as its much simpler

why is my old hard drive with XP needed to select windows 7 on my new hard drive

Because when you installed 7, you left your old HD in, so the 7 installer saw it, and information was written to the MBR on the current boot disk (your XP one)..

If you had installed 7 with only the new disk installed, it wouldn't have done that.

No panic. Just unplug the old disk, run the 7 install again, select repair, and it will put the MBR on the new drive..

didnt work, and my win 7 disc aint bootable

tried unpluggin hdd wile repairing, nuthing happened

How did you install it in the first place if the 7 disc doesn't work?

in win xp, selected my new HDD with nothing on it

Unplug before repairing, see if that helps.

If the DVD doesn't start, go into BIOS and put your DVD drive as first in Boot order/priority.
