924 Views 26 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  the_beast
when i install windows 7, my disc wasn't bootable. so i went into XP and installed windows 7 ON THE NEW HDD. (winXP is on the old)

now i am done transferring songs and movies, so i took my old HDD out now i get

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT THE OPERATING SYSTEM CD AND PRESS ENTER.

i do and nothing happens. my old hdd is dying and idk why i need it.

i still have the option to boot from win xp or win 7 with just my old hdd connected, but it fails to boot into win 7 cause my new hdd with win7 on it isn't plugged in.

PLEASE HALP!!!!!!!

Use your Win 7 DVD to repair your install, and everything should be fine.

But the MBR is not.

You need to do a repair install.

What DVD do you have Windows 7 on?

Great to see you're thankful that people are taking the time to bother trying...

This *problem* is something that most people won't encounter, as you have to go through a specific set of rather silly steps in order to fubar the windows installer...

this is why you pay attention to the SATA port numbers... and install your OS on your hardware while configured in its final configuration...

remove all entries, re-add your windows 7 install...

no, this is why a forum exists...

once you have corrected the BCD with ONLY your new hard drive with windows 7 connected, http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBC...r+from+the+DVD

i said my disc doesn't boot. it still installs though.

i didn't mess up the windows installer. stop acting like its my fault. i didn't know i had to un plug my old hdd out wile installing win 7 on a DIFFERENT hdd.

didn't think windows would write the data to my old drive, and not my new.

is there anything i can do if i can boot from my win 7 cd?

Who's fault is it then?

Stop acting like those trying to help you actually owe you something. They are posting to try and HELP you solve the issue YOU created for yourself. They get nothing for their troubles but your bad attitude.

If you keep going on like this you will not get further help from anybody. Try to remember that your are asking for a favour when you post asking for help here, and you should be grateful for any replies you get.

i am grateful. im just frustrated. ive been messing with this thing for 8+ hours.

and please do explain hows its my fault.... id love to hear it. i installed windows 7 the right way. i did nuthing wrong. i don't know why i just cant copy the files onto the hard drive. its bumming me out. i want my old junk hard drive out of my pc. its loud and is dieing. now my whole rig relys on it cause Microsoft decides to write files to a different hard drive than what the os is going on.

is it possible to make a bootable win 7 CD? ino im missing just 1 little file, that makes a cd bootable X_X

you need to Boot your install disk, you know your vista DVD?... if it doesn't boot, how does it install?

i didn't say you messed up the installer... as the installer is on your vista disk it would be rather hard to alter this accidentally... i said you messed up the install... as in the version of windows you installed...

of course it's your fault... the problems was due to your actions... and the simple solution of reinstall is not feasible due to your wishes... Who elses fault would it be?!

you installed windows 7 on a new drive with the old drive with bootloader still in the system... you basically setup a dual boot with the bootloader being on the old drive... as you may have noticed, this doesn't work without the old drive in the system...

Did windows 7 even install to C:?

Do you know how to change your BIOS boot order?

now, relax, take a step back... set your system up with your new HDD as primary... SATA channel 0... remove your old hdd... boot the easyBCD... clear your boot configuration if it finds any. then boot your vista installer DVD... and follow the other instructions on this thread to repair your bootloader...
