One Laptop Per Child is set to dump x86 processors, instead opting to put low-power Arm-based processors in its next-generation XO-2 laptop with the aim of improving battery life.

... at the cost of compatibility with a LOT of software?

wow. i don't know if this will be such a smart move for the people who use these things
Gotta redevelop.... EVERYTHING....
well in places that dont even get power having a long lasting battery is probably the top priority.

Having a PC but no electricity source is an inconvenience even long battery life can't overturn

But yeah, I see the kids walking 5 miles to the church-school-learning-place.

with the original olpc they had these hand cranks that could charge the laptop batteries, so even in remote villages they could still operate the laptop.

Wasn't OLPC XO-1 Fedora based? If so ... what they need to redevelop? They have to recompile, but not to redevelop, which is thousand times easier and faster.
And it will be even easier to switch to Debian or Gentoo.

PS. I have heard about this OLPC as $100 laptop project, right?

These people aren't going to be playing crysis for crying out loud.

a big part about building someone a computer is knowing the market segment they fulfill.

In fact, the OLPC is using linux so its not like they are missing office 07 or anything anyway.

These machines are meant to introduce computers to groups that might not otherwise have the ability to use them. They are to use them for education and collaborative learning, not gaming or anything.

Not to mention, ARM is probably more widespread than x86, as it is currently used for TONS and TONS of embedded applications.

Some manufacturers are thinking about using dual-chip designs (x86 + ARM) in laptops because the power requirements are so beneficial for ARM systems in comparison to x86 for low-power applications like e-mail and web surfing.

Don't hate.

The OLPC, for the Nigerian that wants to scam on the go.

[seriously though] Noble project, really. I'd be a little more concerned with the quality of life before the use of a computer though.

Wow, people really do have to use a hand crank to charge their laptops? That is epic. How the hell are they getting internet access with zero electricity?
Wouldn't it be more cost effective to buy mass amounts of older generation laptops instead of redesigning a laptop 8 times?

Exactly, I mean, Nigeria is one of the most poor conutries in the world, it is suffering of multiple civil wars (just like many countries in africa) and it's one of the countries with the worst living conditions...

They should better worry to supply them with food and water, health care programs and things like that, instead of worrying for giving those kids a stupid laptop...

They need to EAT and STUDY, a laptop won't be very useful for that if it doesn't have any internet access. It should be better to build schools and to improve their infrastructure.
