Opinions in news threads

I don't usually post news, but do a bit of it on another forum I post on and over there we have a rule that:

- The OP/first post contains the news and ONLY the news
- If you have an opinion on the news, post it after the OP

For example, that's what I did in the first news thread I posted on OCN:
http://www.overclock.net/hardware-ne...bios-p5qe.html

It's not a drastic measure but it prevents the OP's opinions from flavouring the news and allows you to read it and form your own opinion on the news. This might also help in reducing the amount of flamewars started by a news thread.

Instead of posting an article like this:

Nvidia; masters of rebranding and overpriced junk

Which would invariably cause that news thread to degrade into a flamewar, it would be like:

So instead of having a flamewar based on the OP's opinion, anyone can objectively read the news and post his opinion on the news without considering the OP's opinion. Also, the OP's opinion can distort what the article says. As in the example I posted above, the article never said Nvidia was garbage but that's what people might think if the OP posts his opinion in the same post as the news.

For this reason, I support this suggestion. Thanks Afrodisiac.

Moving the opinion from the OP to the first reply isn't going to make a dent in the flame war. Someone's going to say it anyways, and someone else is going to be butthurt and flame. Then it just snowballs.

If it helps reduce flamewars, good. If it doesn't, no big deal because it will still help make the news cleaner and easier to read.

I agree with this. Need an example of how bad this can get - go read Slashdot.

Every 'article' that is related to Windows/Mac/Linux is so blatantly biased in the summary that it leads the entire discussion in that direction.
I like this suggestion and I support it, except I think that the person who posts the news shouldn't be allowed to state their opinion until after they receive their first reply.
Well put Afrodisiac as the News in NOT an opinion (or a rumor for that matter).

A member should not be debating or be opinionated in his/her OP IMHO.
As you stated, the OP should in all fairness only be bringing the news in the OP and later post to debate as he/she sees fit with along with the other members with in the rules!

Again, this is IMHO only!

Exactly. Like I said, I think it would be best for the OP to wait until their news thread has received at least 1 reply before posting anything other than the facts.

Yeah, flame wars will still ensue as usual.

Then the rule should be that news threads are not allowed to have opinions posted.

I'm going to assume that this thread will be overlooked and not taken into consideration at all.
In admin's original news posting guidelines, it was noted that there was "no need to add useless commentary" - however, I assume I'd be terribly mistaken if I assumed that everybody read that and everybody interpreted it correctly. I will clarify that statement in the guidelines to include opinions on articles, and will ask the News moderation staff to keep a closer eye on overly opinionated postings.

In terms of staff reading this forum... I have an email subscription to this entire subsection, and make a point of reading everything posted in it (even if I either can't reply at the time or dont have anything useful to add to a discussion or debate taking place - that happens too). You can be sure somebody is looking at your suggestions here and making note of the ones that we think might be worth implementing, even if you might not receive a reply immediately.
