Opinions on new cable modem

My parents have [for as long as I can remember] bought Motorola Surfboard modems, and they seem to burn out on a yearly basis. The one they gave me is starting to die [internet is getting slow, speeds up once I reset it], and I was wondering what modems you guys recommend. Price isn't a big option, as I'll be asking for it for christmas from my parents.

I had the same problem until I switched to a Linksys cable modem. This seems to be their new model.

Pity, because the old model was meant to stack with the WRT54G series.
sorry to hear you are having some issues with motorola. shame because i was going to recommend the SB6120.

at this point though. i would at least suggest to avoid docsis 2.0 modems. there are 2-3 (including the motorola) that support docsis 3.0 and trust me, when it becomes available to you, you will love it ;D

considering how Comcast only offers an 8Mb service in my area at MAX [for $80/month], I doubt we're high on the priority list TBH.

I've called comcast up and asked them what their development plans for the savannah area were, and they told me the usual "we don't have any plans" to try and drop the subject. All they could tell me was about "internet 2.0" or something like that.

I have no problems with the Linksys one linked to above, but as said, it is only DOCSIS 2.0, but that does not seem to be an issue for you.

It honestly sounds like there's an underlying problem with wiring, rather than the modems itself. Motorola SurfBoard series modems are so widespread for a reason: excellent reliability.

By all means, buy what you like, although I'd suggest another SurfBoard, or Linksys. Of course, it might be in your best interest to get your CATV line checked out. I know that Savannah sees some pretty ridiculous weather.

I've had mine for over 6 years. No problems at all.

SB5100 2.3.8.0

I would check your incoming coaxial line, it could be screwing with your cables downstream/upstream signals.

How long till you have to reset it? Because I got cable and I've gone almost 2 months without resetting the modem because of slow speeds.

modems that have external psu's seem to last longer... i use ambit's but i would suggest getting a switchmode power supply for them to make them last longer.

I would, but Comcast tells me if they send out a tech and no issues are found I have to foot the bill for them being sent out. And they've screwed my parents on that one before.

Tech comes out, says there's an issue, they'll get it fixed. Next bill, $250 'Diagnostic' fee. It eventually got sorted, but the last thing I need is more stress right now.

Check out your modem status page and reference the power levels and such. Also, a voltmeter on your power strip will tell a good story. Lots of troubleshooting you can do before you even think about calling Comcast.

Or you can just threaten to go with AT&T unless they send a tech out for free. There's no reason in the world for you to go through more than 1 or 2 modems during the product's life.

Actually, I found the real culprit. It was my router [oddly enough], and a call to Linksys get things sorted. They had me enable MTU and set a packet limit, and now things seem to be good again.
