I would think it's a good price seeing as all the opterons have had their prices hiked up lately. The 144 is the best choice by far and worth the extra $40

Comparison: expected overclock...

144 = 2.6-2.8ghz // 1M L2 cache

3000+ = 2.5-2.7ghz // 512k L2 cache

the 1M L2 is gonna make a good amount of difference also in speed..

Most definitely the Opteron... I saw those hit 3Ghz with some juice(1.55-1.6 Vcore), The Venice will require this voltage for a moderate overclock...
I must admit that the extra cache isn't much of a benefit when it comes to 3D benchmarks... I would of gotten this CPU per the amazing overclockability by itself.

Even if you have the same OC the Optys dubble the cache of the Venice is an advantage worth the processing power of about 200MHz.

Some guy off of another forum I go to.

tytlyf, I'll look into that and see if the motherboard I'm going to get has that.

Well, I'm not sure tytlyf, it says Front Side Bus 2000MT/s HyperTransport interface, but it also suggests a few DDR600 RAM sticks, so to actually use DDR600 well, would the FSB need to be 300?

correct, you are probably good then with the board, and most boards do support it. But you still want to make sure just in case.
The reason I say this is because the chip has a x9 multi, you would need 300fsb to reach 2700mhz. The chip can probably run higher than 2.7, so this is why I recommended checking for stability at that high of a FSB.

If you have the extra cash.. consider the 3700+ Sandy

It's about $20 more than the 144 and offers the 10x multiplyer vs the 9x of the 144 and both have 1024 cache!!!

I got my opty at tigerdirect and it's only 176 shipped. Came in friday...mobo doesn't come in till monday cus newegg shipped it to louisville kentucky, which is one hour away from me, to indianapolis indiana which is 2 1/2 hours away...o_O. BTW, stepping is CAB2E, so I'm hopefully expecting 2.6, 2.8 would be very nice...

Sorry for double-posting, but I've heard the new 3700+ are amazing OCers. I believe they're getting about 2.9-3.0. What's the stepping you're buying BTW? Not to dis you other forum member, but just making sure he's not selling it because it's a bad stepping.
