True common practice or overkill?

dont bother with phase....alot of hastle.
As far as the 148 you were referring to, its an excellent stepping.
My 148 is the same thing except a week earlier....CABYE 0542 FPMW. I can run 3.1 superpi 32M stable on air, takes alot of volts...CABYE steppings are about the best available.

I wouldn't say that....the CABYE 0540 is king....right there with the CABNE 0528. And I believe the GPMW stepping are better than FPMW. From all the overclocks I've seen on multiple forums, the GPMW's tend to be the chips that have the chance to be beyond amazing..

Thanks guys Ill e-bay the 144 which. is no slouch. aaand get the higher multi-maybe its time to go to water too- have too see what $ is availabe
it is SO desirable to get -like a tec unit and hit a temp button and GO even if its not Zero K -lol there is no ambient variation involved like with water - a concern with the seasonal variations out here in So Cal
