Overclocking 7900GS AGP?

Hello,

I have an XFX 7900GS in AGP (I know...) with 512MB memory.
First of all, many sources (including users) claim this thing should easily be able to run games
like Battlefield 2/2142 and ones with quite similar graphics with decent framerates.
Yet, I can't get thát much out of it, most games keep it at like 20-30 frames.
Some newer but lighter games are quite OK, but the ones where it's needed most (like shooters) isn't really smooth.
Even when I take care of the cooling, the software-cleaning
and things like online-pings and not too many players on a server.
I still get mediocre and barely playable results, which is really disappointing.

(Note: Those results were when I still had a 4:3 17" CRT-monitor.
And of course the resolution at a standard 1024x768 and low to medium settings.)

Is it because of the rest of my system?
As you could probably see in my signature, the motherboard is an ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe,
with a Pentium 4 HT at 3GHz, the memory shows 1.5GB, only I added some so now it's at over 2GB.
Maybe the older hard-drives are too slow? Or too full? I keep them clean though.

So, even though I already overclocked it a bit, I thought I'd ask here how "overclockable" this card is.
I added about 50MHz for both the core and memory, which I guess is not much.
But I think I got issues at one point, but maybe it was just that specific frequency?
Anyway, could I boost it up some more or is this card just weak?
Or is it perhaps that old AGP is holding it back? Which would be weird releasing a card for it...

Anyway, please let me know how far I should be able to push it.
I have a Zalman VF900 clamped to it with some Arctic Silver 5.
So, cooling doesn't seem to be much of a problem as the temperature doesn't get that high.

I was personally thinking about pushing it past a 7900GT, as it's the same chipset basically.
So would it be possible to get it to about 540-550MHz on the core and...
well the memory is at 706MHz tight now, but could it also read about 50MHz extra?
I also added memory-heatsinks by the way, included with the Zalman-cooler.

your P4 is the bottleneck, The P4 3.0 will bottleneck a 6800Ultra or x800XT, so no suprise there. Honestly overclock the P4 as high as you can 3.2-3.4 if its a northwood if its prescott you might get to 3.6 or 3.8 honestly couldnt say.

Yeah, I was afraid of that.
The CPU Test in 3DMark06 gives 0fps... is that normal anyway?
Shouldn't it be more even if low though?
I mean, this is one of the better P4s I'd say, not the best there was made.

Anyway, I see it's a Prescott, so I guess I'm on the lucky side if it would get to overclocking.
Could you say if a Zalman-cooler would be enough to cool it with a nice overclock?
Or how much I'd be allowed to overclock it, that is, with that type of cooler?
A maximum temperature would also be a good indication as I always check the temperature.

Another thing:

I've been looking into overclocking the CPU before.
Only, while I'm not too familiar with it yet, I understood you have to up the FSB right?
Well, I found it in my previous Gigabyte-motherboard, in this same system.
But I tried to find that in my current motherboard's BIOS,
it's a different one and I can't seem to find much I can change.
Has this been locked, do I have to unlock it or is it not possible to overclock with this one?

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortuantly I've never even owned a P4 so I cant give advice beyond the theorectical from reviews on what they can do, as for your board, if you cant control FSB and voltage your screwed

Hm, no it's apparently indeed not possible through the BIOS.
But I found a program from ASUS where you can set it in Windows.
Which is probably a little dodgy to most people, but it seems to work.
I already did a short Prime95-test and for now it's clocked +200MHz.

So now I have a P4 Prescott of 3.2GHz, let's see if it helps.
I can already play HD-content without stutters this time.

As they recommend a P4 of 3.2GHz as a minimum for that, they're right.

dont worry about 0 fps in 3dmark06

that test emulates the graphics with the cpu, mine got 1 fps every few seconds

How is your Memory set up?
In your sig says `single channel` do ya have a various sticks of ram in there?
I would take a look there, a couple of sticks 1gb DDR400 with low timings would help!
we have an TOP AGP SYSTEMS list here on OCN, I will try find a linky to it!
Welcome to the forum btw!

EDIT: linky

run up 3dmark03 and get yourself added to the high score table!!

Yes, I deliberately put in the most memory I had lying around.
Because to get it running in Dual Channel it would become 1.5GB.
Which is rather thin...
And it actually performs better this way, so I left it.

I might buy another stick of a GB so I'd have... 3?... Only running in Dual Channel.
But most sticks, even this old, are quite expensive in most stores around here.

Edit:

I actually also saw these: http://www.corsair.com/configurator/...s.aspx?id=1919
They're about $100,- total... good deal or too much?
It's kind of a lot for an upgrade to an old system, another 80 Euros...

I've always wondered, which numbers do I have to exactly look at though?
I know I have PC3200, which I guess is the maximum for DDR SDRAM.
But I don't know about the performance-numbers.

That AGP-list looks interesting, I didn't know there were still thát many.
Especially at forums like these.
But I don't have 5 reps or 250 posts.

OR 3DMark03, just 06, but I guess I can download it at their site?

Thanks.
