Overclocking Athlon 64 X 2

799 Views 18 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Massive17
My dad has an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.5 Ghz and he just bought a Zalman CNPS8700 NT heatsink. I have never overclocked and is anyone here using this cpu and how far can I push it, i doubt it will get far with that heatsink but I think my pops is looking for a small overclock. I downloaded the AMD overdrive software but I got a message saying that it doesn't recognize an AMD cpu on the system so I will have to do it the old fashioned way through the bios. Any help would be greatly appreciated this will be my first step into overclocking so I'm kinda nervous but I can practice on my dads computer so I can do it right when I build mine later this year

1. You should get it pretty far. I don't know your temps but with stock you could probably get 2.7GHz.

2. Tell us your temperatures.

3. It's better to overclock with BIOS than software.

4. The reason it's not detecting your CPU is because you might not have the required motherboard chipset.

5. Tell us the voltage of the CPU as well as the multiplier.

I couldn't get Real temp to work (i have Windows7) so I downloaded Everest to check temps but I don't think the temps are correct because its showing core #1 at -11 Celsius and core #2 at 5 Celsius. So if the temps are inaccurate i dunno if the rest of the info is accurate as well. I'll attach my temps let me know if it looks right

Hmm. Your cpu is probably a Brisbane, they tend to have messed up sensors.

Try core temp. If that's also incorrect, check your cpu temp in BIOS.

Please post V and multiplier or give a link to your cpu info
You are on the money it is a Brisbane, my info is below

Those temperatures look also false. Although first go into BIOS and turn off amd cool n quiet. It downclocks your cpu when it's not under load (that's why it shows 1ghz)

Then tell us your real V, temps, and multiplier

Those are some really uneven temps

Definitely false.

Ok thanks for the guidance, here are the real info and temps. Btw what are safe temps for this cpu?

Well it's hard to say with a default sensor. I tried google to find the max temperature but no luck. I also have a brisbane and my max safe temperature is 62'C.

Okay try this:

1. Raise bus speed by 20

2. Raise CPU voltage by 1 notch ( 0.025V for example 1.3 -> 1.325V)

This should get you to 2750 MHz

I've got to go to bed now, I can help you out tomorrow, search for a 4800+ overclocking thread for help.

Also with those settings run a stress test (download orthos) and tell us your temperatures after 10 min

Thanks I'll give it a try and let you know how it went
I don't see a way i can raise the bus speed in my bios when I go under the AMD overclocking there is only voltage and multiplier. Do i raise bus speed by changing the multiplier?
I think my bios is locked or something cause I can't change the Bus speed. Bios update doesn't work cause I have a 64 bit OS, Can anyone help me please
can you take a pic of the screen or tell us what's there on the page where you change the multiplier?

It's possible that it is set to disabled and you have to enable it
i dunno how to take a pic of the BIOS but after I enter the BIOS I go to the CPU options and select the "AMD overclocking" after that there is only two options, one is for the multiplier and the other one for the voltage. I tried flashing the bios but I can't do it cause of my windows 7 64 bit so currently im trying to use SetFsb to overclock but I can't find my PLL number so no luck there either. I went though the whole bios and cant find the option to enable it.

on the page before where I can change the multiplier and the voltages I can see the bus speed and all the other toggles but they are in the background and I can't select them . where would the disable toggle be?
if you could provide what your motherboard, it would be great. But for basics, update ur bios, figure out a plausible idle temperature and set an offset. After all that has been done, then you can overclock.

As for the bios, very few boards are locked unless u get them pre-assembled from like futureshop, best buy etc etc.

Hope this helps,

Good luck,

its an ASUS M2V-MX SE amd my dad had it pre assembled from Ascendtech.com and I couldnt flash the bios cause of 64 bit W7

I give up my dad needs a new motherboard cause his computer was prebuilt so maybe thats another reason its impossible to change bus speed and etc. Thanks for helping though
