Based on this article, all you have to do to overclock this monster to 4.4 GHz is to change multiplier to x33.

I assume with stock voltage the temperature shouldn't jump that much and my h50 with 240 rad should do the job perfectly?

Please correct me if I am wrong because it's sounds way to easy comparing to overclocking i7 920

I guess 1k price point helps with overclocking

Unlocked core multiplier means you can raise the multi as high as you want, making it easier to OC. Yes, more expensive CPU's are usually easier to overclock.

You arent going to just raise the multi to get the cpu to run at 4.4 and thats it... Plus even at stock voltages rasing the CPU MHz will cause heat...

You will need to adjust voltages, and I highly recommend setting all voltages manually, when you start changing things voltages at auto have a strange tendency to auto adjust themselves too high..

Find a bios template for your motherboard and post it here or in the Asus Rampage III thread and I am sure we can get you clocked to 4.2 or 4.4...

The 980 - 990x are the flagship 6 core cpu's and have unlocked multi's, thats why they cost more..Otherwise they arent much different then clocking any other 1366 cpu...

Raise bclk, raise multi if necessary, adjust voltages accordingly, etc.....

I can have a perfectly rock stable 24 h p95 tested etc OC at x6 that will become completely unstable at x7 (which btw I do have atm

What's the negative side of just raising multiplier?

Why it's better to have unlocked multiplier?

A. There is no negative side to raising just the multiplier, all it really does it makes overclocking easier. Having the ability to change the multiplier on the CPU allows you to bring the clocks of the CPU higher without having to mess with the FSB or bus speed, because raising the bus speed also increases the speed of your ram and along with your QPi link and such (This usually creates an unstable situation that requires fine tuning of voltages or memory timings)

So with an unlock multiplier, you just bump up the multiplier and test for stability and increase cpu voltages if needed.

i find 200blck then whatever multi you can swing with decent voltage (low as possible) is better for performance, running 1600mhz ram at its rated speeds at 2:8

This is a great read to help you understand and or catch up on the settings. Their meaning and how they work. On some settings i prefer higher bclk and a lower multi. And sometimes it is the opposite of that higher multi and default or lower bclk. just depends on the heat and what app, test i'm using though. but it is a great cpu. Enjoy it and have fun.

Well I just got my 990x set multiple to 30 and bingo 4 ghz did not half to mess with anything. I set my memory first qpi-dram 1.3 1600mgz ht turbo mode on tri-sli 580's 3dmark vantage 48500.....

very easy to over clock don't mess with volts unless you intend on 4.5 and beyond have fun.
