First off: I have absolutely no idea about this, but I'm usually a quick learner.


After some online reading, I already know that both my CPU and my mobo should generally be pretty good for OCing. I've already installed a better CPU cooler because I don't wanna take any risks.

But - I've noticed some weird stuff, maybe it's just me...

1. My Kingston RAM is only running at 800 MHz, but the tech specs from the Kingston website state 1066.

2. Even with the new cooler, CoreTemp gives me an average idle temperate of 40° Celsius.

So... Help? With basically everything? If you need more details about my rig, please just ask.

First off make sure your heat sink is seated properly. From there what is your ambient temps?

Furthermore your ram can run at 1066 but it is running at 800? That is fine, just need to play with memory straps is all. Also best part is my board is EXACTLY like yours, just I have an extra PCIe slot.

Don't worry about idle temp, pick a conservative load temp to stay under to start with, like 65C, and begin bumping fsb by 10 and do quick test for stability.

Take all the voltages off auto and set them to their defaults.

If you're impatient, you could go ahead and set the dram to 1:1 or 5:6, set vcore to 1.3 or 1.325, bump the NB and cpu pll by .1 above default, make sure the dram voltage and the first 4 timings match whats on the sticks, and put the fsb on 400. It'll probably boot. If the temps are too high lower v core until their acceptable. If temps are okay and it's stable keep upping fsb by 5 or ten until it's not.

It seems like my e8500 wouldn't read below 40C even thought it really was. I would load it and the reading wouldn't climb immediately like it should. After 30 sec or so when the chip actually reached 40 and went towards 50 it would read properly. It's been a while but that sounds familiar.

This. This is the method I use all the time XD

ALso my newbie guide should help you out a lot (as I wrote it with the setup I have below XD)

2. Also very possible. We have -10° Celsius outside, I like it rather warm in here. Could an ambient temp of about 25 to 27° cause that?

Other than that, thanks for the two helpful threads, I'm off to reading them now and once I'm doen with that, I'm sure there'll be some more questions.

Okay... So I had Prime95 running for 3 hours now, the temp doesn't rise over 60C. Is that good?

I just looked through my current bios settings and if I understood the guide at least a bit, I should make the following changes:

increase CPU termination by 2-3 notches
Current setting is 1.20V, so I should set it to either 1.24V or 1.26V, right?

set DRAM voltage to its specification
Current setting: 1.8V, exactly where Kingston says it should be at 800 MHz. But the specifications also say the timing should be 5-5-5-18. Instead it's at 6-6-6-18. Does that make a big difference? Especially since it can run at 1066 MHz, with the recommended timing 5-5-5-15 and 2.2V.

And here's my tons of questions.

The guide also says to set the FSB: DRAM ratio so the RAM is at or below its rated speed. I couldn't find any option like that in my bios, just something called "system memory multiplier"... Also, where can I change the northbridge voltage?

I've also read somewhere around here that I should lock the PCIe frequency to 100, is that correct?

I have a DDR2 with currently 800 MHz, but the specs say 1066 is possible. So 1066 MHz would mean a maximum FSB setting of 533 MHz, right?

Is the FSB speed the setting you would make under the "CPU host frequency" option?

What should I do with the "performance enhance" option? I've read that the "standard" setting's usually more stable.

I mean, I'm not really aiming for the stars here, just something between 3.4 and 3.6 GHz would be nice for a start. I really wanna take baby steps here, especially since I'm still waiting for my new case fans, I think more of these could also help my temps a little...

First you might have stuck temperature sensors that can`t go below 40C..

I have three stuck sensor that can`t go below 42/40/40 but hey work above those temps..

System memory multiplier is what makes RAM to run at certain speed..

You`re using 2.4 memory multi that gives you 333MHz FSB x 2.4 = 800MHz RAM..

You need 3.2 memory multi to run RAM @ 1066MHz with 333MHz FSB..

Please post in THIS THREAD as there are lot of Gigabyte P45 users that would take you way beyond 3.4GHz...

The sensors could be delivering bad data, those of Core 0 and Core 3 never go below 40/41. Core 1 and Core 2 are usually 2-6 degrees cooler than that.
