overheating issue?

Well first off, sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

But ,Whenever i play pretty much any game... from civ4 to l4d... My system locks up. I have a feeling it could have to do with overheating.

Here's some screenshots i took of HWmonitor. I left HWmonitor running well i played some l4d, and i waited for my system to lockup, then i would hit ctrl alt delete and end the hl2 process... (i did this twice)

Anyways here's the pics

My cpu has been running close to 80C
and TMPIN2 got up to 127 C.

I have no idea what TMPIN is, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't a good thing.

So..wait, is this a different computer? Cause your sig rig says you have an i7 rig.

In any case, i'd try to reseat the CPU heatsink with fresh thermal grease.
80c is definitely way too hot, also give us the specs since its not whats listed in your SIG RIG.
CPU, CPU COOLER, etc

I actually just ordered the machine yesterday off of newegg. And I'm giving this machine to my dad.

Well, it's a amd athlon dualcore 6400+ like it says, with a stock heatsink.

Need mroe info. Which PC is this? Stock cooler? have you tried to reseat the HS at all? What about GFX card settings?

edit: Also, use some other temp apps to make sure it is consistent. Compare 2 or 3 of those with BIOS and see what you have.

That seems hot for that voltage even with a stock cooler.
You most likely need an aftermarket cpu cooler, even a cheap one will outperform the stock one most likely. also check that the thermal compound is there and applied right. like a small line or some people like to use a grain of rice size line.

Also get some Compressed AIR and make sure theres no dust in the heatsink or fan, dust can cause alot of heat buildup.

This is a good point. If the PC has been running for a while (especially on the floor and if you have pets) it could simply be an air flow issue. make sure to clean any fan/case vents/grills too.

I just took off the cpu heatsink, and there was no dust in it, but there was absolutely no thermal paste on it :\\... could that be the problem?

I've been running this machine for about a year? and i just started having problems this last month.

Well, no TIM is definitely a problem, but it just doesn't evaporate. Did you build this system? I don't recall if stock AMD heatsinks come with the TIM pre-applied like Intel.

Yeah, I thought they did

i guess i never checked when i put the machine together....

Anyways i went out and bought some thermal compound and put it on.
The temps dropped dramatically ...

Heres a screenshot of HWmonitor after playing a full level on left 4 dead something i couldn't do before

drop nearly 30C

yep that looks like normal operating temps
