Case - NZXT Lexa-S, 4 fans. 1 x 140mm and 3 x 120mm

Processor - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H

RAM - 4 GB DDR2-800 Corsair

Video Card - XFX Radeon HD 4870 1GB

PSU - 750W Corsair CMPSU-750TX

A cheap little aftermarket AVC heatsink fan

1TB HDD

22x Sony Drive

Some cheap 2.1 speakers, I already have a nice sound setup, but the speakers came with the computer, so.. ;]

Standard MS internet keyboard

Microsoft Optical Intelli-Mouse

Win 7 ultimate 64 bit

Tuniq thermal compound

Starting from scratch, I only have a 15 inch monitor (I know, lol at me) but it works and I like it. Its max res is 1024x768 (I know, lol again) but it suits my needs. Think that setup will allow me to blast through most games without any hiccups? First time building a computer from absolute scratch, wish me luck. Any advice? Everything is costing me $950 since I also needed the OS.

Looks fine but you could shave quite a bit off your OS purchase.

Windows 7 home premium OEM (you will have to buy it with some of your other hardware to qualify) sells for about $100 less than ultimate.

Unless you absolutely need the couple of extra features in Ultimate, the extra $100 you save could go into decent cpu cooling.
I don't plan on OC'ing the 955 above 3.5, which is why I figured a slightly better improvement over stock cooling was sufficient. My girlfriend insists that the build has Ultimate as there is some strange feature in it that's required by something somewhere in her college classes <.<

It doesn't make sense to me, either. But we'll be sharing this computer. By sharing I mean, it's mine, and she can use it sometimes
But I'm stuck with the Ultimate unless I want to enjoy celibacy for a while.

i would suggest getting ddr3 memory instead of ddr2.

DDR3 ram:

-uses less volts, so less power
-OC's higher and is faster than ddr2
-isn't much more expensive than ddr2 at the moment(the small price difference is worth it)
-you can use the ddr3 in a future build(ddr2 should be old tech by then)

It's not faster than DDR2.

That is bandwidth advertising fluff.

DDR2 runs at much tighter timings which offset the higher speed of the DDR3 memory.

On the intel X58 architecture, you will see a speed increase in certain memory benches but you also have to consider improvements in the boards architecture as well.

On the AMD boards, I don't believe this is the case.

However, your point regarding future expansion is valid. DDR3 is now in many cases cheaper than DDR2 and most motherboards are going this way.

this board uses DDR2 memory in its specifications...

I like the setup. I like that you took the time to find some case fans, too! Something that tends to be forgotten when setting up a build.
