Uhhh so much trouble. Ok so I just got this board and it booted up fine but when I try to change the FSB it is locked (yes its on manual). I did some research and found out this was a problem with the 0812 BIOS so i saw a thread of people that downgraded to the 0703 but all i could find was 0705 so i gave it a try. First thing I did was put the .ROM file on my flash drive and reboot to use EasyFlash and a warning came up saying "at no time disconnect the power or blah blah blah" Anyways the BIOS updates really quickly and says "Update successful. System will reboot in 5 seconds" Now its been an hour and the system has not rebooted. What should I do, wait it out or reboot? Ive heard horror stories with ASUS and bios flashing. I really don't want to brick this thing. WHat should I do?

Ok I just took a chance and restarted it. It started right up with the correct BIOS and works right but the FSB is still locked on my Q6600. Now Im at a loss here because i have done what everyone else said they did to fix this and yet still I am locked into 266mhzb fsb.
It shouldn't be locked, do you have AI overclocking on manual and adjusting the FSB Frequency with the +/- keys? (Just checking...)

Good job on the bios flash, I always get nervous too!

Ok so i made a mistake. Downgrading from the 0812 to the 0705 did work right. I can change the FSB now. Phewww i thought i was stuck.

When you're setting the values it won't pop up with any kind of menu, it won't even flash, you just press enter over a value and put it in. Maybe thats your problem?
If you flashed the bios and it said successful, it should be a done deal. Since it's working now, that's a good sign too! You can either check in bios or use CPU-Z (Or other) to make sure.

Ya, after an hour i was starting to get worried that it wasnt gonna reboot. All is well now so I guess im good.
i thought those boards had like a 90% fail rate.

I bought a P5K vanilla when they first came out and ran a Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz (Folding hard for about a week straight) until the 4 pin power connector melted taking out both PS and MB. I was using a cheap power supply at the time so I've never been sure which component caused the problem. ASUS replaced the board and I got a good PS. I've been running a mild OC on the replacement board and havn't had any problems.

Vanilla boards in my opinion are weaker the their deluxe versions. That's not to say they are bad boards, just not able to OC as well (Take as much abuse). I've had 2 vanilla MB (P5K/P5B) die on me but all my Deluxe MB's are still going strong. It may be that the Deluxe MB's 8 phase power design are built to handle higher voltages or simply just better boards overall. I know that you will see big differences setting both vanilla and deluxe boards side by side.

I guess my experience taught me that you don't put a V8 Hemi into a Toyota Corolla without expecting something to break when you give it full throttle. I think if quad testing was done on the vanilla boards prior to launch, they may have put a warning "Not designed for overclocking Quad cores" on them. They seem to handle quad processors fine under normal (Stock) conditions, but for heavy loads I would only buy a board truly capable of handling it.

Overall I've been pretty happy with my P5K. I'm just giving my full
of thought and experience with it.

Well I have everything going great right now. Im actually liking this board very much. There are alot of options (most of which i will never use) but its good to know they are there. I wont be doing any heavy overclocking. I noticed the jump from 3.35ghz to 3.4 was pretty big considering the amount of voltage needed to keep it stable. I think I may stop there as I dont really want to go higher than 1.42 on the core. I may acually just back it down to 3.3 because I can definately live with the voltages required there.

thats great everything worked out for you and i dont know why it was locked up for you thats pretty werid but i was using a 45nm cpu so yea i had to update bio's welps i hope the 750i is better then that mobo or i downgraded =( also sorry for all the complications you went through because it worked great for me for awhile david

I found out it was the BIOS you had loaded did not like the q6600 for some reason. I am not the only one. I saw there were lots of people that had the same BIOS that were locked out of the FSB with this chip. No problems. I figured it out.
