Passthrough Authentication

Can someone point me to a complete noob guide to setting up a passthrough authentication server for a WAN?

I need to set one up for a Wireless ISP I work for, and can't seem to find a noob guide. Most guides assume I know everything about all the hardware/software, and I do not.

for what platform?

edit: to my knowledge it's usually associated with the windows implementation of active directory, for the LDAP environment. my first question would be, why is an ISP using Windows Server as a pass-through server? but anyways, setting up PTA is very different depending on the server platform.
