Is there a way to set a password on a folder? Say I create a folder in "My Documents", is there a way to put a password on it?

You can encrypt folders from windows by right clicking the folder, properties, general, advance, encrypt contents; but that's only to keep others out from that folder from different sessions.. If you want to put a password to the folder within your session, I'd recommend FFP, although there are other similar software, just google for it.

Also, i hope this helps.
If you mean, You share a computer with family or friends (home comp) and like you say you have win xp, then, when you have created a userlogon screen with a password go to your docs (My Docs) and:
Right click > Properties > Sharing > tick the "Make this folder private" box.

This way when users are not logged onto your user name (which would require a password to login to yours if you set one) they will get a "Access is Denied" message when trying to enter YOUR My Documents folder.
Hope this helps if that is what you meant?

does FFP have to be installed on every computer that youre using the file on, or can you encrypt the file and then put it on a thumbdrive and take it and use it anywhere without the software?

It depends on windows, so no.. In that case, you might encypt the files in a zip/self extractable zip.

can you put a compress a zip file so that a password is required to extract it? or is there some other way to put a password on a file that doesnt depend on anything else like that?

Yea.. you can put a password on a zip or self extractable zip(exe) file, which will be requested before extracting files. You can do this with a couple other formats.. rar, 7z I think.

You can use 7-Zip, just select "make SFX archive" when you make a 7z file, and a self extracting 7z exe will be generated instead.
