I just got myself a nice plasma TV (a big upgrade from the CRT I had), but I'm having some trouble with connecting the PC to it.
For reference:
TV: Samsung PN50B650
Video Card: 9800GT
Sound Card: Xonar D1
1 - The PC is connected to input "HDMI2/DVI" on the back of the TV. According to the manual, this input can accept both audio over HDMI, or audio through the stereo RCA jacks that are right next to it. But neither of them actually work. I get is a picture but no sound. But the PC is outputting audio - at the very least over RCA - because when I connect it directly to the stereo it works fine. I also tried it on a different HDMI input, and still nothing.
2 - The input for the PC keeps getting dropped randomly. The TV detects if anything is plugged into the ports, and when first connecting the PC it finds it just fine. But after a while of watching other stuff when you go back to the source list it's no longer there and the cable needs to be unplugged/replugged for it to detect it again.
Try setting the audio settings in the panel to sub instead of main. I'm not sure if that option is there. I have a samsung HDTV but I don't use your connection for audio the way you do. Worth a shot.

I had the same problem with the HTPC I just built over thnxgiving. THe board has an HDMI out, I had it connected to my Plasma on that HDMI and I got picture, no sound, and the HDMI sound profile was greyed out when I went to look...
Checked it if was the HDMI port or cables by switching them around with the cable box one. End result was that I had to dig out a DVI to HDM adapter - that one ended up working just fine, soon as I plugged the HDMI cable into the adapter running from a DVI port the sound profile clicked on, win7 recognized the HDMI cable as "plugged in" and I got sound out.
I honestly do not know what the underlying issue currently is though
I wish I could find out so that I could come straight from the hdmi port on the motherboard but for now im just happy to have working audio thru the hdmi cable :sigh:

Right now, yes. I've got a receiver coming in a few days and then it won't be on the TV anymore, but I'd still prefer it to go through HDMI for simplicity's sake.
what an odd thing to happen, i just got a HDMI cable today to replace VGA and 3.5mm to RGB as that's all very combersome. for my LG 42' LCD HDTV the HDMI worked fine with the onboard HDMI my HTPC has. my DivX dvd player previously used the HDMI cable, i changed that around for a Component cable, and now the HTPC uses the HDMI cable, now we can watch Blu-Rays with ease and peace of mind. to bad the that your plasma's giving you unnecessary complaints :-/, another reason to get a LCD instead of a cheap Plasma
EDIT; bad spelling, pvp309rcp - read what i wrote, i said onboard (aka inbuilt) HDMI on the HTPC
Is that actually possible? Thought if you're running an HDMI from your video card to the HDMI HDTV...you would only get video and not audio since a video card doesn't output audio (I think). If it did...the video card should at least include an audio cable where it would connect to either the motherboard audio header or sound card (depending on what you want to output audio). I'm probably wrong...but good luck on that anyway since I could learn from it when you get it done.

Except it wasn't exactly cheap, and the sound input has nothing to do with the panel type.
Though I am kind of regretting getting a plasma, I use still images way more often than I thought. But then again, if I bought an LCD I'd have complained that I could have gotten a better picture quality with a plasma, lol
. It's just too bad they don't make 50" progressive scan CRTs
. I don't care how deep the cabinet would be, I'd still make room for one.
It's most likely a driver issue with HDMI on the PC, not the TV's fault. Make sure the HDMI is selected in control panel> audio settings or whatever instead of your normal sound card.

That's the very first thing I tried. I also tried it through the Xonar software, both PCM and DTS.
Though there's no actual HDMI selection in sound options, it's either Analog or S/PDIF from the Xonar. It has an internal S/PDIF header that's connected to the graphics card.

Yea when I was trouble shooting I tried Realtek drivers for HDMI and ATI drivers of various versions. None of them fixed the sound problem. But with all the drivers the sound came out from the rca or when I connected thru the dvi to hdmi converter on the motherboard.
Like Manyak I am just looking to keep the cluttered cable thing reduced.
Heh manyak I JUST got rid of a 34" crt... 200lb monster! it's what I replaced with the 42" Plasma (Zenith brand but when I went checking the model number it is actually arebadged LG tv based on the model number).
As far as the video card needing a connection to an audio header; I read somewhere that there is a realtek chip onboard the video cards that does the sound but I am no expert and can't remember where I was, use google way too much through each day...
1a. For using audio over HDMI with an nVidia card you need to have the spdif connected from the motherboard to the card. My card didn't come with one so I had to order it from ebay for $8. Then the audio out setting needs to be switched from speakers to SPDIF. Don't forget to restart any currently running programs that might benefit from this setting change. (This is what I use)
1b. If you are attempting to get audio out through another means there is the issue that when using an HDMI cable that audio out is expected to be sent and recieved via HDMI. There might be settings you need to change in nVidia's control panel and/or your new TV.
2. I had an intermittent HDMI signal from my PC to my TV which turned out to be a faulty HDMI cable. I was using a 25' HDMI cable which I bought on Amazon for $9. It required unplugging from time to time or wiggling to restore the signal. I returned it for a 25' flat HDMI (in wall rated) $30 cable also from Amazon that worked perfectly from day one. Suspect a bad cable and test it with a known good cable if possible.

Yeah there's a realtek chip on ATI cards. But screw that, I want my Xonar.
And yeah my CRT was 32"
. It's a sony trinitron though, and has pretty much the best interlaced picture ever. I've actually still got it hooked up side by side with the plasma right now......I still need something to play games on while the plasma's getting burnt in

1a. That's what I'm doing. Except instead of connecting it to the motherboard's S/PDIF I'm using the sound card's S/PDIF. But you know what, I might as well remove the Xonar and try onboard to see if that works, at least that might narrow it down a bit.
1b. I know, I'm just pointing out that neither way is working.
2. Ok I replaced the cable, so let's see what happens

LoL! you are a step ahead of where I plan on heading. I have to wait a few more months before getting surround setup lik you are. Oddly the CRT I replaced was a Sony trinitron as well. One of the best tv's I ever owned!

I won't have a real surround system for a while, I've only got the receiver on the way. I've got some really nice speakers and sub on my current stereo, and I'm picking up a pair of rear ones from a friend (from a busted stereo-in-a-box system). But I won't get a whole new set of speakers until next year.
Anyway, it seems like the HDMI cable was bad, because with a new one it's not dropping the connection. There's still the issue of the sound though :/
Can you clarify on the audio issue? Audio out is working because you've tested the output via the RCA plugs on your stereo and the sound works. When you plug these same RCA cable into the appropriate connection [DVI audio in according to your manual] you get no sound?

Correct. That, and S/PDIF over HDMI isn't working either (through an internal wire between sound card and GPU).
One thing I'm thinking could be the problem - at least with S/PDIF - is that the sound card has 3 pins for it while the GPU has only two. The third pin might be some sort of plug sensor, except I can't find any info on which pin does what.
Either way that still wouldn't fix the RCA issue on the TV.
