PC wont POST (every so often)

Hi Guys,

Forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place, I did a quick scan of the main subforums and couldn't find a help forum

About a month back I turned my PC on and it didnt post (and showed nothing on the monitor)... I checked inside and all the fans came on, the graphics card light came on & there was definately power running through the PC, I managed to fix this by using the "reset jumper" to reset the BIOS to default and then just reloaded my saved OC and everything booted.

This problem has become more and more annoying, I have had it happen a few times in the past week & I have tried taking the graphics card out and replacing it with a x300SE (no power needed), my RAM out/moving it around & disconnecting all SATA connections (HDDx3 x DVD-RW) with no avail.

I'm starting to think that its a dodgey PSU or mobo, Has anyone else ever seen anything like this happen? If so, can you shed some light on this situation?

Thank you,
Dan

Edit: The PC is stable, CPU & NB voltage are also stable

Could be some of short in the wiring, for instance, a malfunctioning power switch. Also if it's an old system the CMOS battery may be starting to go.
Thanks for the reply grossebeaver,

I have checked that nothing is shorting as I've taken all the plugs out and checked the jumpers etc and I can't see anything that could be causing it.

Its also relatively new (bought it in august) so it shouldn't be the CMOS battery.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again,
Dan

I've also had this problem before, wouldn't post and was fixed by doing the reset jumper method.

I couldn't figure out what was wrong so I basically took everything out, put everything back while double checking all connections. I basically redid the wiring on my system as well.

Since then, I've had no troubles after a clean format. I doubt that this is the true solution but it was the best I could do.
I had a similar issue where my computer would start up, everything would come on like normal, but nothing would show on my monitor. Ended up being one of my RAM sticks.

I would try and take everything apart and then put it back together making sure all connections are tight. Try rearranging your RAM sticks as well.
Download memtest86+ and burn it as an iso image to cd then boot with it and run it for ram errors. 2 or 3 passes should be good and test with one stick at a time.
Ahh thanks for the replies, I will try memtest and then, if that doesnt work, redo the wiring, thank you guys

may want to look at voltages or a lack of power, your problem reminds me of a computer running at the min range of its amperage. Could also be your bios panicking over a voltage mistake that isn't there
To simplify, the question is "What is corrupting my BIOS"?

In my opinion it is either a shaky power supply or RAM.

This was the first thing I did, I normally run 3.4GHz @ 1.28v (1.4v on NB, anything over and my mobo says its "dangerous")

I've check the voltages going to everything else and they seem fine, I've set a few to auto so that I know it will boot and it still doesn't boot

I thought it might be my PSU but I dont know, It might even be corrupt BIOS as I forgot to mention in my first post, but it started happening about 2 weeks after I upgraded to the latests BIOS, I'll report back with the results of memtest in a sec (Y)

Thanks again,
Dan
