Motherboard Model: M848A Rev 2.1 (Latest Bios from Pc Chips)

I have recently upgraded my cpu from a Athlon XP 2000+ T-Bred to an Athlon XP 3000+ ( Barton). I reset my bios with the jumper on the board and then put the new cpu in and attached the new cpu cooler. When i turned the pc on it boots and then gives a cmos error and tells me to check the settings like default.

So i checked all the settings and the Bios looks like it has correctly recognised the ram at 200 and the cpu at 166. So I reboot the pc and noting displays.

Then i had to reset the bios to get a picture back (using the jumper) I have got the latest bios from the pc chips site and applied it and the same thing happens. The motherboard will work if i manualy put it to the old 2000+ settings but it seams that anything above 2200+ does not work

My Vcore is running at 1.6V at the max settings I can get the cpu to boot at

From my own experience and what others have said here, PC Chips motherboards are not that great for overclocking. If you can, try to get a refund on what you have and get an MSI if you're looking for a cheap motherboard that can still do a decent overclock.

This board is a remarked ECS 748A board and as such will work with a 266/333/fsb and will overclock to a 400fsb and higher.

This board has an automatic recognition in the BIOS so it should work. There are no frequency jumpers on this board. I would remove the power supply cord, remove the motherboard battery and then set the jumpers on the "Clear CMOS" and press the On button a few times. Be sure to have your power supply cord removed when doing this. Then leave it for ~15 minutes. Set the "Clear CMOS" jumper back to the original position. Replace the battery and power cord and power it up.

Thanks guys i know the cpu should mbe supported cos i looked on the pc chips site. I chnged to an ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard and i can now get a picture at boot and the cpu is detected at the correct fsb but i get a blue screen of death when trying to install Windows XP

This problem resolves if the L1 Cache is disabled. Is the CPU Cache damaged.

Thanks for you help

I would test this new chip in another board. If it fails in that board it is the chip. If it doesn't fail then there is a problem with your board's acceptance of the chip.

I think i have found a solution. I boot the pc at 2200+ 1.7ghz and then once in windows I can change the fsb safely up to 166mhz. It works and the pc is stable.

Weird

Thanks anyway guys. Doing this also has its advantages eg prolonged cpu life cos I only need the speed when gaming. (So I dont really care)

This sounds most strange indeed.

If you enter BIOS during the POST SCREEN and change the fsb to 166MHz manually by user define and the Vcore up to 1.7V ish then save . Will it exe windows ?

AMD XP3000+ (333MHz Barton) is default 166x13 for 2.17GHz. As stated before that motherboard should support it.

Was the CPU purchased new or in a used condition ?

cheers

No blank screen
I asked some guys on a pc chips forum somewhere and they said that its a know bug with the m848a at 166mhz doesent boot they said put the fbs to slightly above that 168 ish or 164 is and it should work (which it does) Problem solved. + I discovered the asus board that did boot with the chip didnt like my ddr 400 ram and i changed it for some 333 and now that works aswell

Much happieness

Thanks for all your help
