hello,

i want to add a pci e x1 usb 3.0 card to my system and connect the 20 pin usb 3.0 header from the front panel of the chassis to it. (my pci e slots on the MB are gen 2).
i see there is a lot of differnt types of cards out there. my question is do it need aditional power? or what it gets from the pci e slot is more then what it need?
from what i see some cards with sata power other with molex or even 6 pin power adapter and there is some with no aditional power (all the power they get is what the pci e X1 gave).

1) so do the cards with no aditional power will work?
2) if i buy one with aditional power and dont plug the aditional power it will work?

all i am trying to do is to avoide more cabels in my pc.

Of course. Why wouldn't it work? If it doesn't have a power connector on it, then it's designed in such a way where its power consumption isn't too high for the slot.

I have one of these in my computer, ill pull the power off it and see what it does.

The pcie lane has 25 Watts, with a 12v and a 3.3v lane from what i've read. Bus powered usb devices need the 5v rail which is not on the pcie lane.

I think if you don't attach the power connector, devices which get their power from the usb port will not work (some external ssds might fall in that category), usb flash drives etc should be ok.

edit: twocables is probably right, but I'll still try pulling the power out of the one i have at home and see what it does.

When you use USB 3.0 from a PCI-E card adapter, you need an auxiliary power connector (usually will be the 4-pin floppy power connector or 4 pin molex) or else some portable hard drives, keyboards (usually the LED ones) will not work.

yep, so i pulled the sata power out of it, it shows up in device manager and says working properly, but nothing works that i plug in, including usb flash drives.

sometimes there is bad products outhere so im not sure. but from what you said i understand that in the usb 3 pci e cards its possible from a technical point af view to make one with no aditional power.

No, I thought you said that you saw some that don't have power connectors on them. So, then I said that if you are seeing some that don't have power connectors, then that means they don't need extra power.

He's saying that if your adapter has a power connector on it, then you need to use that power connector or else it won't work and it could cause other things to malfunction too. I don't know if this is true, I'm just explaining what he said.

FWIW, I just ordered the PCIe USB 3.0 card that Oculus recommends as compatible with their upcoming consumer market version of the Rift. Apparently not all such cards are created equal.

I figured that I might as well get the one they indicate is compatible and take advantage of the research they already performed...

one of them with aditional power and the other dont have one, both of them should work with any type of equipment?
for example:
1) 2.5" external hdd thats gets his power from the usb port and dont have external ac power
2) simple usb stick
3) keyboard
4) mouse
5) any ather thing you plug in to the usb port..

i prefer the one with no aditional power, so i can avoide one more cable in the MB area.
sorry if it sound like i repeat my question its only because i want to be sure before i buy one.

Don't let benjamen50's post confuse you. He said that if the adapter has a power connector on it but you forget to plug a power cable into it, then some of those things might not work that he listed. That's all.

Don't over-think this. If the adapter has a power connector, then plug a power cable into it. If it DOESN'T, then don't worry about anything. Just use the adapter and enjoy it.

I ADDED A 3.0 PCI-E CARD YEARS AGO, AND FOUND OUT THAT a) IF YOU DO NOT HOOK UP THE ADDED POWER IT ONLY WORKS AS 2.0 ( AT LEAST MINE IS THAT WAY) B)AS SOON AS I HOOKED UP EXTRA POWER USB 3.0 WORKED
