I haven't heard of him but I am looking for a new book to read. Which is your favorite?

Depends...

If you have time the "Nights Dawn Trilogy" is excellent - its really 6 books.

His writing style is not the regular "run-n-gun" science fiction war stories. It is more operatic (though there is a lot of action) - many themes interwoven, and his fictional technology is plausible if one doesn't deconstruct it too much.

Maybe start with "Fallen Dragon" - I single book.

There is also: The Greg Mandel series that kicks it off with "The Nano-flower"

He has a website, take a gander...
