Phenom II 940 temps help

1857 Views 34 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  its my first time
Hi I recently bought a phenom II 940 to replace my x2 550.

I'm really struglling with the temps, I've been reading people getting 27 degrees on idle when overclocked on air???

I get nowhere near that at stock.

My set up is the exact same as when I ahd my 550 and the temps I got on that were great.

What are normal temps for a 940 at stock?

I'm using a noctua nh-u12p cooler so it's not as though I'm usign a cheap stock cooler.

I've also re-seated the heatsink, and re applied arctic silver every way possible, spread, small dot etc etc.

i'm dissapppointed with my temps

The temp sensor on some of the 940's is kind of FUBAR.

What are you using to check temps?

I'm using core temp, everest, hwmonitor, asus pc probe

Also do you have any diea what temps people mention when they say idle temps, are they talking about the core temp, or the cpu temp in software?

My core temps idle at 37 degrees according to core temp etc.

And everything is at stock

I know that the 550 used less power than the 940 so i wasn't expecting similar temps, but I've been googling and people are saying they get low 30s some even under 30 with stock heatsink

Either the sensor is messed up as you said, my cooler is crap, or people are lying about idle temps at stock with the stock cooler.

Yeah, with the stock heatsink, I'm currently getting 30c. Mabye you should try reseating the heatsink.

30

I've literally re-seated heta sink about ten times, cleaning both heatsink and cpu each time and re applying arctic silver 5.

I even tried a different method of applying arctic silver each time.

Out of interest what vcore is your cpu at?

As maybe my mobo is putting too much vcore for stiock settings.

Also what software are you using to get your 30 degree temp.

I just don't get how the stock cooler could give better performance than my cooler

Thanks

Also with those idling at 30 at stock 3ghz is cool and quiet enabled when you get 30 degrees?

As mine is disabled
Mine idles higher than that, just make sure that your load temps are under control. I get a less thn a 10degree rise when running prime. I think that the temp sensor on these 940's are just funky. I idle at 42 degrees just to let you know. I gave up a while ago.
It's actually normal. These chips run nice and hot. 30-37C is about a normal idle. Also, your ambient (room) temperature will make a big difference as well. I idle at 33C with my Xiggy (1.4vcore 3.53GHz OC) but when I was at home with my P180 and about a 25C ambient, my temps were an idle of about 38C. Unless you have cool'n'quiet on, there's no way you have 30C on a stock cooler. Unless you're ambients are around 15C...

Thanks for the reply

Are you at stock 3ghz with stock cooler?

Thanks for the info.

You make a good point about ambient temps etc, as I could have the exact same setup as someone and still have different temps, as there are so many variables.

I guess my concern was that I gogoled and many said they would get about 30 on stock cooling, With me getting way above that with an aftermarket cooler, I immediately thought somethign was up.

Another thing I did find today after apply arctic silver in different ways was the small dot in the centre worked better than spreading a very thin layer all over.

That's what my first reaction was, are these people suign cool and quiet, as 30 at idle would explain.

I mgiht try and enable cool n quiet and see what my temps are at idle.

I had it disabled as I had my 550 overclocked on same mobo, and will be overclocking the 940 too.

No, I am at 3.6 Ghz with 1.45V, with a xiggy cooler.

Thanks.

And is your 42 degree idle temp the core temp or cpu temp, what software are you getting the reading from.

Sorry for all the questions

I just enabled cool n quiet in the bios, my idle temp drops to 30.

So even if those who get 30 with stock cooler have cool n quiet enabled they are getting the same temps as me

This is fruistrating because I'm getting paranoid that something is wrong somewhere.

That is really any software based reading. Bios reports like a 35 degree idle. Like I said, I just started worrying about th eload temps.

Yeah I forgot to mention that is with cool and quit enabled, and I'm using AMD overdrive to mesure the temp. The processor is at stock settings. It also depends on the case with my antec 300 illusion I was getting 33c but with my HAF922 I get 26-30c.

That's true. If I enabled some type of CnQ with my P180, I would manage 29C. With my Sniper, which is a ton better at airflow, I'm sure I'd hit somewhere around 25C idle.

Damn, so 29C would be with stock cooler with cool n quiet.

How are you applying arctic silver or whatever paste/compound you use?

edit: just realised sniper is a pc case, what cooler would you use the xigamatek in the sniper case, or was that stock cooler in sniper case?

Thanks

I use OCZ Freeze. I just apply a dab and press down, and slightly turn it back and forth to get it to spread somewhat naturally, but manually a bit before I mount it. I had the Xiggy in both the P180 and the Sniper.

I used the dab method, but didn't twist the heatsink (eve though it says to in the heatsink instructions
)

I might clean heatsink and cpu and re apply compound.

Never hurts to redo it
. Right now with my AC off and it's about 24C in the room, I'm at 37C with CSS, WMC and iTunes running.
