I've got this guy who keeps on telling me to upgrade to a Sandy Bridge system because my Phenom II 955 is a bottleneck for my 2x6850s.

Is he full of ****, or is he right?

It is partially true, a Phenom II 955 would theoretically bottleneck the gpu set up you have, but in most of the games that are out currently, you won't see much a performance difference so it might not be worth it right now right now. But later in the year with BF3 and Skyrim, it would probably be beneficial to have a better processor performance wise.

You should see a performance bump in many games, but you'll already have solid framerates to begin with for the most part. I noticed real-world improvement gains across the board going from a 1090T to an i5 2500k. Nothing earth-shattering, but noticeable. (Gaming and light development only, no truly heavily-threaded tasks outside of that)
