Hi, I have a little problem. I am pretty sure that my cpu/motherboard are dead. It has been about two weeks since I am trying to figure out what my computer has, it keep freezing at windows launch. I have tested multiple things such as ram, raid, cpu and I can't figure it out.

Now, I have decided maybe I should buy something else but I don't have lots of money. Currently, I have a q9550 on a GA-up45-ud3p and I would like to get something at least equivalent or better, but like I said, I have max 400$.

Do you think a phenom II X4 965 well overclocked could do the job or should I go for a Core i5 750.

Thanks for your time and answer.

For gaming they should be about equal, for almost any other use the i5 will be slightly superior. I would go with the i5 760 + ASUS Maximus III Gene if you're not going with a multi video card setup.

BTW, why the asus maximmus 3. Is there something special with this motherboard?

Because what I need is a motherboard that supports well the RAID0.

Most any board these days supports RAID 0. And he's right, the i5 should edge out the PhII 965 in most things.

I just came from a phenom II x4 oc'd @ 3.7 Ghz to an i5 760 @ 4.0 Ghz, and it's incredibly faster on almost every benchmark I've thrown at it so far. I have a gtx 470, and I just didn't think my phenom II was keeping up with it, so I bought the i5 760, and confirmed what I thought. On RE5, the benchmark used to get ~84 fps with the phenomII, and now I get ~117 with the i5. I haven't had a lot of time to do many benchmarks, but all the games I have tried, have run better.

The i5 750 was the CPU I was originally going to go with but when I seen game benchmarks of PHII' X3's and X4's hanging with it I decided to save some money.

I got my 720 Black Edition for $120 when I bought it, the i5 was $209 at the time.
The i5 750's straight up 4 cores 4 threads makes it a crazy overclocker, usually good for 4.2-4.4Ghz on air...you won't get much more then 3.8/3.9 Ghz out of a PHII.

Hmmm, well the i5-750 may outperform the X4 965 BE in some areas, but there are some areas the Phenom II X4 965 BE excels in. First of all, it's easy as hell to overclock, so you can get some easy extra performance boost out of it. I think the two are the same price, so you may want to check that, but I'd be with the Phenom II X4 965 BE, easier to overclock, and more performance. Plus, there are some sweet AMD supporting boards out there in the market

$170 i5-760 at microcenter is a no brainer choice over X4, even X6 if gaming is concerned

Go for Phenom II X6 1090 and ASUS Crosshair IV Formula.Six core do better than 4.If you oc 1090 to +4 GHz you can dominate any application.

Dominates?

Haha, that's funny.

For the same price as a i5 you can get a x6 from AMD.

You'll also save on the mobo, hands down AMD kills intel in value to performance rations every day of the week and twice on your mothers birthday.

Says who PH II can only do 3.8/3.9GHz on air?I can easily get 4.0GHz out of a PH II 965 with 1.48v CPU vcore & its air cooled with TT Frio

^ post stability pics... validations pics mean nothing

but he's right, the chance for an i5-7xx to get to 4ghz+ is higher than PHII X4

Congrats, You out of like millions of people. The general consensus of Phenom II X2/X3/X4 owners will say they can't get past 3.8 or 3.9.

A Core i5 or i7 is pretty much GUARANTEED to get 4GHz, they do it without even breaking a sweat compared to a Phenom II.

My 955be is running at 4.01ghz at 1.48v as we speak, no problems with stability... maybe I got lucky but its seems that with adequate cooling that it isn't too hard to achieve higher clocks... only get up to about 59c, idles at 42c, little too hot for comfort but its almost comparable to a stock heat-sink, at stock clock-speed.
