What is a plausible overclock for it with a Corsair H50 water cooler? I know, H50, but I had a great deal on it (45$). I was hoping to hit 4.0ghz, but anything works for me

Depends on the individual chip and mobo, along with the cooler.
My chip only got 3.7 on my old mobo, and now I can do 4.0 on my new one with the same temps.

4 GHz is a gamble with the C3 revision of the core.
Sure you can play games and stuff, but I doubt it would be ITB stable.

C2 version of the 965 should yield a 3.8Ghz easy OC with an H50

The C3 version should yeild a 3.9Ghz OC, possibly up to 4.1Ghz. Remember to not go above 1.55v for 24/7 operation at the same time keeping your temps below 55'C max.

I've got my X2 550 BE @ 4Ghz right now with the H50, and I haven't seen temps above 42C Under full load on BF:BC2. - BTW, The 550 BE has C2 stepping, which sorta kills the overclocking.

If you keep it on Constantly, keep it at a maximum of 1.55V's - If you dont, then I can say go as High as 1.575V's.

Umm.. that's completely false. I would go so far as to say most people on this site who have been buying 955/965's recently have been able to achieve at least 4ghz. My chip will easily go to 4.3ghz and I simply haven't tried pushing any further as the 212 can't cool it well enough at those clocks/volts.

I would say expect 4ghz at about 1.45v that seems to be about the average.

Yeah, you should expect 4Ghz Since your on Air cooling. Since he's gone to water, You can achieve much more (By more I mean like 300-600Mhz, depending on if the chip is a really good batch, or a crap batch.

I've had a 955/965 before and I would know.
Did you completely ignore the fact that I said it may be stable in most conditions except vigorous stress testing?

No I did not, and IBT is not the harshest stress test for a CPU. P95 is generally regarded as better. I have had an overclock stable in IBT and P95 fail in BC2 though so go figure.

Most people don't run IBT with high enough RAM usage nor do they run enough iterations of it. IBT generally produces higher temps than P95 in my experience and catches what P95 doesn't.

You are right it does run hotter, I'm basing my info about P95 off what other forum members have said (which can be dangerous). In my experience I like to run IBT, as like you say it catches things quickly, then run P95 for an hour or so, then run games.

The fact IBT runs very hot is a downside to it for me though, as nothing else runs as hot as it does, so it's not relevant to real world applications like games that will often run 10c cooler.

I do like to stress the CPU with both P95 and IBT.
It's a great combo in my opinion.

I just can't stand having any application crash my PC due to temps or lack of voltage.

My chip could only push like 3.8ghz with my old modded H50 and that was with like 55c load.
My chip can hit 4ghz, but falls on its face when I try to push it further, but I am on an am2+ board rather then an am3 system, so I think that might be hurting my overclock a bit.

Every chip is different, but I think 4.0 should definitely be a goal for you to hit. My 965 C3 is running stable at 4.1ghz on air, with a liquid cooler you ~should~ be able to get at least 4.0

My 965 C3 is at 4.0ghz 24/7 with 1.424vcore on a fairly cheap mobo, and can do 100 passes linx no problem now in the schorching summer with core temps never breaking 58 celcius.
