You think it crashed while updating the firmware? that can't be good
follow the no post guide in my sig to make sure the bios is the problem.

First of all tho reset the Cmos by shorting the two little jumpers or removing the motherboard battery for a few minutes. Hopefully just a failed unlocking.

alright well i cleared the CMOS and i could turn the pc on again (tyvm) but whenever i try to make any of the adjustments to the bios it just turns off and locks up. I do have a relativly small PS in this system due to it being matx and a htpc. would this be the fault?
Welcome to OCN!

If you could please fill in your system specs under the User CP, it would be very helpful to others in assisting you....

you didnt turn it off while it was updating did you? 300 watts for that setup should be fine though...

Usually if something goes wrong, the motherboard should automatically revert itself to stock settings
your PSU might be questionable, what's the brand/specs?

its 99% to be the psu..just cus its 300watts..doesnt mean its 300watts of quality - I.E. who knows how much fluctuations are going on the 12V and 5V..so yea..those are critical..
we dont know what PSU he has yet. For now its all speculation
Appears to be an unlock failure.

Sorry to inform you but I don't think your 550 is going to be x4.
Hi ,

Unhappily I have also Gigabyte 785GMT-UD2H

It is a bad choice for core unlocking !
My 550BE also can't working with 4 core in this mobo, but in another Asrock 785 series I can use 4 cores.
Sorry4my english

here is the info on the psu

Power Supply
Model PowerMan 300W (IP-P300DF1-0)
AC input 115V~230V, 7.4A, 60/50Hz
DC Output
DC Output +3.3V +5V +12V1 +12V2 -12V +5Vsb
MAX Current 20A 12A 16A 16A 0.3A 2A
MAX Combined Wattage 110W 240W 10W
Total Power 300W
I'd spring for an antec or corsair or other high quality PSU maker. Just to rule that out. I think that "300 watt" is your choke point

only problem with that is it's a matx so i dont want to poor much cash into an htpc psu. i dont really need the other 2 cores, just thought it would be nice if i can get it for free.

i guess since i have this topic open, and because i'm a complete noob, how can i go abouts overclocking the cpu? i dont even know where to start in all honesty. I dont want to buy a new heat sink or anything so i'd like to use the stock parts.

a.) what steps do i take to OC? (Tutorial or something is always helpful. I dont mind reading, i just dont know where to start looking)

b.) for the people who own this set-up or one similar, what can i boost it to safely without the need for any alterations?

I'm currently @ the 3.1 ghz and i'd like to be able to get to 3.4-3.8 if possible.

I use XBMC for all my home theatre files and it's cpu intensive so the extra speed is actually more beneficial than the unlocked cores at this point

Thanks again ppl. You have been a big help thus far!

The simplest way to overclock a black edition amd processor? Raise the processor multiplier by half steps until you blue screen, then back up. After that, run some stress tests, if you pass a couple of hours worth, you're good

If that PSU can't handle unlocking cores, it can't possibly be stable at any clock speed that requires extra voltage.

A PSU is not something you should buy cheap. You want a well-built, heavy (literally) PSU. 400W or more IMO.

Watch your temps when you overclock and stress test it. Stay away from 60C.
