I recently got internet installed in the house (well about 3 weeks ago it was set up).
It's 8mb (though the test I have done show about 2mb), when I try to play online games such as cs:s my ping is not steady, it goes from 200 to 400 to 800 back to 200 like randomly.
I am connected wirelessly and get 4/5 bars signal.
I am wondering if this is the problem as I have the same issue on XBOX live, the lag is unbearable on my xbox live also (which has 3/4 bars of signal strength).

Is your wireless secured? Check that no one is using it that shouldn't be.
Connect direct (hardwired) to the router and see what your ping is then.

It probably is. I play Death Star Battle which is one of many zones that uses a game client called Continuum (formerly known as Subspace). Whenever somebody plays this game on a wireless router, all we ever hear is "lagger!" and other such comments. It has gotten to the point where I can sometimes tell if somebody is using a wireless router. All I have to do is check their lag randomly and regularly, and if the ping is bouncing around, then I know that it's probably wireless.
I think the reason for this is there are still a lot of devices that share the 2.4 GHz frequency: microwave ovens, cordless phones, other wireless routers, baby monitors, and possibly some 2-way radios.
So, based on my personal experiences, I'd say that this is normal. However, I look forward to being proved wrong and then educated. That's one of the reasons why I am a member of OCN.
Yeah it's DSL and I have checked in the router settings and I can't change the band from 2.4GHz, it is stuck on that.
It's a crappy free router we got with out internet package.
Ill try connecting it wired but it will require a very long cable to go upstairs and I'm not sure if I could do that/secure it down safely.
Ok thanks guys, I might have to buy a new router.
TwoCables, I never have this problem in my other house (parents), I connect wireless and I never got lag at all, I think it may be this routers rubbish range as my housemate downstairs connects to it wireless on his PS3 online and doesn't get any lag at all, but he is right next to it.

Ah ha! So, the router's a piece of you-know-what. hehe
It sounds like we figured out that a new router is the answer. And if you're looking to buy one and save a ton of time, then I 2nd the suggestion for the WRT54GL. I own one, and it seems to be awesome. Not only that, but it's the GL model, so if I wanted to get third-party firmware, I don't have to worry about running out of megabytes.
The only thing is, I [have to] live at home with my parents. The purpose of the router is to give my mom's laptop wireless access, but my system is directly connected to it.
