Plasma, LCD, and LED which is best for a 48inch+ HDTV?

5255 Views 97 Replies 39 Participants Last post by  Manyak
Okay, I'm buying a HDTV real soon, it will be a 48inch+ screen size HDTV. I'm looking for the best deal I can get on black Friday. I'm hearing that for a big size screen plasma is the best way to go. Before I purchase a HDTV I want to hear from OCN!

note: I remember hearing that Plasma has a burn a in problem. This really concerns me, I hope with newer technology plasma TV have found a fix. Does anyone know?

thank you
Michael

I owe a 48" plasma and its great for me no problems neither any difference between same sized lcds(they say glass is causing side view problems) you must have an 160 degree or close to that angle to have view problems(glass is causing) but ive never heard someone wathing tv like that

I can't comment on Plasma, as I have never owned one or even watched one for any length of time. All the LCD's have been great as long as you spend the dough on a good brand.

LED definitely. I have seen high quality CRTs, High quality projections, Good LCD, good Plasma, and good LED, and LED look the best by a landslide. so bright, such good color, and 1,000,000:1 contrast, opposed to about 7000:1 (max)

if its for tv/movies Plasma ALL THE WAY!

i have 2 vizio plasmas and i love them (50inch and a 42 inch) the picture is so much nicer than LCD tvs.

go for a plasma, the Panasonic you linked to looks great, go for it and dont look back

old, old, old plasmas have the burn in problem, newer ones dont

Plasma. Dark blacks really make a big difference in movies. No more Dark Grey Knight blu-ray movies! Specs don't really mean much, just make sure its 1080p, 120+Hz and has enough HDMI connectors. Also, for the love of God, make sure you have some hi-def content to watch on it.

plasma's used to be grade A crap, mainly due to the limit to the angle at which the picture could be viewed, thats no longer an issue as i have a plasma thats 2 years old and its viewable at any angle no problems

by far the best is the newest tech which is the led tv's thin cool bright and expensive, all the things a good tv should be

okay so first... i own these..
40" Polaroid LCD
42" Samsung Plasma
50" Samsung Plasma
55" Panosonic Plasma
42" LG Plasma
15" GoVideo LCD
21.5" LG Monitor

with tv's nowadays theres alot to consider. price. what your watching. how big you need.

in the 36"+ range the plasmas will be cheaper
they now have pixel shift which will move the pixels around to try to prevent burn in and ghosting. this isnt COMPLETELY fixed but its hardly noticeable unless you stay on the guide for a half hour and then go to a black screen.

now most people say that plasmas have truer blacks. this is true for some. out of all my TV's, the polaroid is the highest quality IMHO. i wish they didnt stop making them. I have been liking the vizio plasmas lately though. if you plan on gaming at all...get and lcd.

you should make sure your tv has the basics, hdmi, 1080p, 16:9, truehd, 120hz is preferred

the last thing is LED. they are sharp. perfect for high light environments. but price is an issue. your better off getting a huge top of the line sony and a sound system. itll be the same price as an LED

With LCD sets, some of the lack of depth in the blacks can be alleviated if you know how to properly adjust your color and brightness settings. I have a 40" Sony at home, and once we set it to our liking (backlight ~30%), the blacks were quite nice (definitely better than the 20 year old NEC it replaced).

Bright screens are only good if you have good lighting around it. Have some lights on and it isn't that bad
