This sheds a lot of light on the subject and how to fix it:

https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=12369.0

(All hail The Stilt with full credit)

Tools:
The Tahiti GDDR5 Identifier software doesn't work under Linux, but VBE7 works in Wine and is able to list the memory manufacturer and model from the BIOS information. BIOS image can be read with the Linux variant of atiflash without rebooting the PC or you can use atiflash off a bootable DOS USB flash drive.

Note: if you happen to have a 7970 Vapor-X, this thread and my appended post is an easier fix:

It's being removed by dropbox as they have flagged it as a "high traffic" item.

You can download from here

Care to expand? What's your hashrates on 280x? What are your settings?

There are a few cards that have decent vBIOS out of the box and don't benefit from his tweaks

Is there anybody have The Stilt's BIOS file for MSI 7970 Lightning (None BE) which uses SK Hynix H5GQ2H24MFR memory? Its name is MSI_TV278MS_103_K2_AGR_VA.zip. I can't download this file due to the dropbox link has been removed. Please help me to send this file to me if you have it. Thank you very much for your help in advance.

My email address is [email protected]

Thanks & best regards.
