Hi all,

I am having an issue that I was wondering if I could get some help on.

While gaming, GPU usage will be 90% or higher, however according to MSI AfterBurner, it will randomly drop to less than 30% usage and go back up. This causes my FPS to drop to low 20s for a few seconds unless I alt tab to another window and back to my game, at which point, my FPS goes back up instantly.

I have RMA'd my GPU since I thought it was that but I am getting the same issue with the one they sent.

Could my PSU possibly be dying?

I have an EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3 and EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650w.

The PSu is unlikely to casue such a problem so its probably something else like your motherboard RAM or SSD/HDD
Please either fill out your system and have it under your sig or list everything you have in your next post

Here is the rest of my system.

i7 7700k
MSI z270 Gaming Carbon Pro
EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4-3200
Samsung 960 EVO 500GB M.2
NZXT Kraken X62
Windows 10
EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W
NZXT S340 Elite

This problem started a few weeks ago after being perfectly fine for the past few months.

Its really hard to tell what the problem is as it could be any number of things
One thing you can do is reinstall windows because if the problem goes away after a windows reinstall you know its not a hardware fault

Was this in a particular game or any game ? I had the same issues in Battlefield 1 and solved it via a complete driver removal via DDU and re-install, after this I got consistent GPU usage. Are you also setting your GPU power settings to ''Adaptive'' in Nvidia Control Panel ?

Almost forgot about that but what you can do is go into the Windows control panel and under power settings set everything you can find to max performance
Do the same in the Nvidia control panel

That might fix your problem as both the Windows and Nvidia power savings modes are known to casue some strange stuff

Currently I mainly play PUBG and Dota 2 and it happens in both of those. Power management is set to Max Performance for PUBG and the default Optimal Power for Dota 2.

I had never heard of DDU before. I will try that before trying a Windows reinstall.

DDU is short for display driver uninstall and my advice is when it asks you to reboot do it in safe mode as it can casue havoc on your system if you reboot into normal Windows mode
Found that out the hard way the last time i used a DDU
