Possible to have semi-universal socket?

I'm just wondering if it would be possible to have a universal socket that could accept new and older platforms, while maybe having compatibility with what's further down the timeline. I know that each have their individual specifications, but it would be an interesting development, as well with motherboards supporting this, and being able to actively switch between dual-channel and tri-channel memory configurations based on the cpu detected. I suppose this isn't a question specific to Intel, but AMD as well.

bascially the technology advances so fast things need to change fast... a universal socket would just make things cost more...

seriously, how much trouble is it to buy matching hardware?

That's pretty much the extent to what you are asking.

A universal socket would be awesome if it was possible, but it would severely limit design potential down the road.

not really.they just dont want to because this limits their income. people would buy alot fewer motherboards

they can do whatever they really want. they choose to change sockets and not make them compatible. well intel seems to do that already. dont they already have another socket lined up? this makes me almost want to go AMD. my quad setup is good enough for now tho

Not possible because of different interfaces and pins used, for example, 1156 differs from 1366 because you only need p55 for 1156 whereas 1366 needs x58 and another chip like ICH10r

if intel wanted to, they could make all the chips use the same general design to save us consumers. they just want their money

Give me an example

and intel realized that they count make much more money if they make mutiple sockets. therefore people cant get a 6 core cpu on the 1156 socket if they wanted to. and then a new socket they are coming out with? theres many thread only here discussing the bull**** intel is pulling. i like their chips, im just not happy about their ethics anymore

There's a few motherboards from EVGA that has the Socket 755 holes for Socket 1156 CPUs.

There isn't much/any proof for that but it seems plausible...
