My brother and I built him a computer over a year ago.
Q6600
4gb DDR2 OCz gold
ocz 500w psu
low-mid range Gigabye motherboard

A month or two ago he called he up. Apparently one of the metal guards from the case PCI slots had come lose, dropped and fell on the back of the Graphics card during operation. Sparks, etc. Graphics card is dead.

He replaced the graphics card and continued use. All of the sudden, (1-2 months) it's having difficulty booting, and the screen is gibberish colors and patterns occasionally.

Monitor is plugged into motherboard right now..

Probably the motherboard, right?

Might be the PCI-e lanes that may have been trashed. Did he try to change the slots

That graphics card was most definitely dead. Visible shorts. He's gotten a new one, but now I'm running it on just the integrated graphics card. It's still giving tons of issues. I guess I'm really just wondering what's the chances of damage to the other components.
