Drive is just 1 month old and already it seems 7% is used up, the TBW is no where near the supposed 1200TBW it's capable of so what is going on here? Is the drive failing or is it somekind of error in Crystal Diskinfo? I have tried other programs and they all report the same 93% health. Readings have dropped from 95% to 93% in just a few days with no dramatic increase in TBW. The reason TBW is close to 7TB already is I copied a few bigger files initially at installation since the actual TBW hasn't increased alot at all.

There might be something wrong in your OS and it might not be the drive look at the amount of write data
You might have some mining malware or something like that if you did not write 6 TB of data to the drive yourself

If you did that yourself holy jesus thats a lot of data in and out
Otherwise yeah there might be something wrong with the drive if 6-7 TB is all it takes to bring it down to 93%

Use samsung magician to check drive health. Crystaldiskinfo. and others aren't the best for determining a drive's health.

They may base the 93% health remaining on the total amount of writes in smart data which could be incorrect.

Samsung Magician actually do say 7% used but that's just not possible if drive is supposed to last 1200TBW, there has to be somekind of error in the smart data being reported by the drive:

Well that just means that 7% of your spare blocks were used to repurpose other blocks.
7TB is a lot of writes for such a short time(I only have roughly that much on my 980Pro 2TB from a couple years)

I don't think there's anything to worry about.

I would rather use smartmon tools to look at the raw data. I dont really trust other Windows tools if i dont know what they use behind.

My C: drive was 100% and my D: drive was 98%. However after updating to the lastest version of crystaldiskinfo. Now my C: drive is 98% and my D: drive is 100%. So maybe your smart info is being swapped around.

My C: drive has 50TB's of writes. My D: drive has 10TB of writes.

FWIW, I have had a much lower quality Intel 600p for 6+ years. I was never able to run SMART or TRIM utilities, because I could never get a firmware update to go through.

That being said, this drive has been 100% rock solid stable on the same windows installation for 6 years.

While I understand your concern, and people can give better feedback than me, I want to alleviate your worries because you have literally the highest quality consumer SSD on the planet. If my drive can perform well for 6 years without ever running a proper cleanup, yours will likely be A-OK for a long time.


As far as crazy write numbers.

• Have you reformatted?
• Have you secure erased the drive?

Either of these would more or less equate to 2TB written, so you could get to 4TB pretty quickly if you install an OS and install a new one. 6TB doesn't seem completely out of the question if you've done any sort of reformat.

Thank you, the large writes are due to me copying some big files initially and that was about 6TB so after that there really hasn't been that much of an increase in TBW. It's more the falling health number that worries me but then again it's very possible since the drive is so new that the smart values are simply not being reported properly., they just can't be I mean 6TBW out of 1200TBW is not 7% used that should be 84TBW.

I have a Seagate Firecua 520 2 TB drive i have about 15 TB on in about half a year and that is still at 100%

The 990 Pro should be a better drive and yet only half the data compared to mine and now it only has 93% left?

There might be something strange going on with the smart reporting from the drive itself, Samsung Magician can not perform the short or extended smart test and complains it wants the latest Samsung NVME driver, clicking information does not help at all. Found the NVME driver page but there is no driver for 990 pro *facepalm. 😂

Like how your gas tank says empty when you have like 30-50 miles left. Just some room for error at the edges of vast expanses of memory.

Funny you would say that because I hadn't installed CrystalDiskInfo at first and when I did after a few weeks it was already at 95% so who knows. There is no new firmware Samsung Magician says it's the newest one but since all other values seem fine at this point I'm suspecting somekind of error in reading smart data from the drive. Drive has a 5 year warranty so that will not be an issue at all I'm going to monitor this situation and take regular screenshots of CrystalDiskInfo readings then we will see what happens.

Can you convert the raw values into plain text? I'm thinking this has to be somekind of smart error I read that in the past people with other drives have had health restored by a firmware update so at this point I'm waiting for that unless health starts to drop much more then I may have to exchange it for a new one.

Yep, I was looking for eventual errors but like on my drive there is none so I'm thinking somekind of reporting error, atleast there are two of us now, I think there will be a lot more soon and that will hopefully prompt Samsung to release a firmware fix. 😊
