...yet another problem with my new openSUSE installation. I went to "Configure Desktop" > "Appearance" > "Fonts" and picked "enabled" from the "Use anti-aliasing" drop-box and hit apply, but it didn't work even after restart. I went to the settings once again and this time went to "configure" and enabled subpixel rendering, but it still doesn't work. Enabling or disabling AA doesn't seem to make any difference at all, and the fonts are really getting on my nerves (I mean it literally, I'm getting a headache from reading stuff on this computer). Help me out - what's wrong?

You need to look at thing "hinting" settings most likely.

If that doesn't do it you are probably missing the micorosft cleartype fonts; there should be a package in the repository.

Update: It actually only happens in certain programs/circumstances. Firefox, for example. Konqueror is fine. I'm beginning to get the feeling that this only affects GTK applications...

Firefox so far is the only program where this subpixel rendering doesn't seem to be working... help! I tried Konqueror but quickly figured out why it isn't all that popular

Fonts are always a PITA. I am still trying to get mine sorted out. Sometimes the font changes after I run certain applications which is starting to anger me. And Firefox compounds this issue because it seems I can't get it set how I want it either.

Konqueror actually has a very good browser engine, it's just that it's sort of bare bones when it comes to features. If it had some of the add-ons that Firefox has, I would switch in a heartbeat.

What distro are you having problems with? With Fedora (10, on my lappy) I had absolutely no problems with fonts; as a matter of fact, this is the first time ever I've had any troubles with fonts/visuals since the day I figured how to turn on subpixel rendering in Ubuntu...
