Hello everyone.<br><br>
I decided to try installing kubuntu on a spare 80gig harddrive. I downloaded kubuntu burned it to a disk and rebooted with the cd in, booted from cd.<br><br>
I got to the kubuntu screen and I chose Instal. It loaded some stuff then it went to a screen that said "Uncompressing Linux............. Ok, Booting from Kernel<br><br>
It has just sat there for about 20minutes now, Is that how long it takes to boot the kernel?\\<br>
It has a flashing cursor like when using comand prompt.<br><br>
Any help would be greatly appreciated!<br><br>

Something similar happened with me, Have you used it from the live cd and tried installing from there? That is what I did.

That is really odd, Did you choose the right download? Just try restart and if it doesn't work give Ubuntu a shot, That is a lot easier to install

I actually tried using a live cd that I got from shipit and then I even downloaded it and burned it myself but to no avail.<br><br>
So go ahead and just give ubuntu a shot?

You tried 2 different burns? Thats really odd that its not working. Ive had bad burns before, but a second one usualy fixed it. Just try ubuntu 6.06 "Dapper Drake" Its really easy. I would have it right now but it wasnt able to partition my extenral hd unless it was to format the whole thing. I didnt want to lose the stuff already on there just to get ubuntu installed.

Make sure your CD Drive is in proper working order.<br />
<br />
I went through Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Debian and Fedora Core 5. All of those didn't install on my computer. Then I finally swich my cd drive, and it works fine.<br />
<br />
I'm now (almost) happily running Fedora Core 5. <br />
<br />
Yay!<br />

I have found that some Linux distributions (after being burned to a CD/DVD) have problems loading correctly under certain hardware configurations. On my laptop all of the *buntu distros fail once in a while to properly install, but usually a few re-attempts solve everything. Ubuntu crashes when I try to install it on my desktop unless I do some extra configurations on the xserver before I do anything else; FC and Mandriva won't even start but Gentoo and Suse work every time.

I don't think it is a problem with my cd drive. It has isntalled countless things correctly, xp pro, bf2, cs:s, etc.<br><br>
I tried installing just plain ubuntu and I still get the same error. Here is a pic, maybe that will help.<br><br>
Thanks for helping guys I really want linux!<br><br>
Edit: Somehow the image got cropped out. But this gives you an idea of what the error is like.<br><br>
The full error message is <b>"Uncompresssing Linux... Ok, Booting the kernel."</b> with a flashing cursor on the next line<br><a href="http://assets.overclock.net.s3.amazonaws.com/a/a2/a2d2d44c_vbattach33606.jpeg"><img alt="LL" src="http://cdn.overclock.net/a/a2/525x525px-LL-a2d2d44c_vbattach33606.jpeg" style="width:525px;height:394px;"></a>

So what do you think I should do? Maybe try another distro? Is there another one that is pretty easy or should I still keep trying to get ubuntu to work.

Well if Ubuntu does not want to work for you, no point on insisting. Just try another distro; they are all Linux anyways.
