I'm going to reformat my rig to vista 64-bit. and i would like to ask what programs should i get for entertainment (music & video playback), a little of games and some maintenance and security and misc. stuff.

Here are my available programs so far:

Entertainment:
WMP (with the OS)
DFX for WMP
K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

Games:
L4D
RA3
Warcraft 3
WoW
NBA 2K9

Maintenance & Security & Misc.:
CCleaner
Alcohol 120
MS Office
NOD32 AV
PC Booster (I think its effective..)

any other recommendations?

DivX player (For Video)
Defraggler
WMP can play DivX with the codec pack. but is it better to have a separate player?
i'll try that.

No, it's horrible. MPC-HC also has everything you need built in if you go to options and enable everything.

Please stop recommending VLC...

Im not a fan of VLC either MPC-HC is very good http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/
I hate codec packs even more so I just install ffdshow if I need to view something on WMP http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm

I really like SpywareBlaster. I also like TuneUp Utilities but you have to pay for that one. They have a free trial too.
dropbox is nice, same with 7zip and revo uninstaller

edit: i prefer open office to microsoft word.
Paint.net is also a good program to just have. ImgBurn is a good light burning software. And Firefox, obviously.
Isoburner, Winrar, CDburnerXP, Utorrent, dopdf, DVD Decryptor, DVD shrink.
You could also toss in Malwarebytes for good measure.
i'll take note of this guys.. oh i forgot to add that i have utorrent and winrar
I like WinAmp. Also the best defrag program bar none is Smart Defrag. And it is free.
gotta have GIMP. VERY powerful free image editor.
Whats up with VLC player?? I use it quite allot and haven't had any problems.

In no order:

Bitdefender Total Security 2009
SUPERAntiSpyware Pro
Perfect Disk
DVDFab 5
TuneUp Utilities 2009

i broke VLC on my laptop. like, really BROKE it.

i opened like 30 songs at once, which froze the program. then i had to kill the process. after that, VLC would never work again - not even after uninstall/reinstall.

i bet a reformat woulda solved it, but i'm not gonna reformat over a media program.

You are having lots of problems, you just don't notice them because you're only using that horrible player... click the link in my previous post in this thread.
