Project: Black Smilodon

----------------------------------

Hello OCN

I'm currently sending out a good amount of my computer parts for RMA, and there is little left inside of my Raidmax Smilodon case. I've seen lots of people paint the inside of their case a certain color which makes the rig look ALOT better. So I've decided I was going to do the same.

I don't know what kind of paint I should use, so I am posting here in hopes of you good folks to assist me

I want to paint the inside completely black, but I also want it to be a glossy black (if possible). What paint would I need? And are there any other tips I should know of before I begin to paint my case?

Thanks in advance!

preparation is 90% of a good paint job

take everything out, even deriveting parts is good
scuff it all with a red scotchbrite pad or some 320-400 grit sandpapaer
clean it all out (blow out with compressor or canned air) then wipe down with denatured or rubbing alcohol
let evaporate 15+ minutes

standard indoor outdoor acrylic enamel primers and paints are fine
prime 4 light even coats until fully covered, let dry according to can instruction before paint. most primes can be topcoated quickly (after 15 mins or so drying time)

if you want a glossy finish and good coverage see if you can get Rustoleum Universal Black Gloss (stocked at home depot). Its a hi build hi gloss paint and you can pass on the clear coat step if you like, thats how good it is. Not to mention you can spray that particular brand from any can angle, even upside down

if you go to my current project table of contents (second post) and link to the later "case paint" based updates youll see where I did the inside of the Intelli case black gloss using the same paint I am recommending here (pics)

I'm doing the same, painting my case, i actually just left my place of work (Boater's World) picking up a few things that i needed. I got a 100 grit sand paper; is that to low of a grit to use for prepping my chassis for painting??
Thanks for the help CattleRustler! I'll be sure to keep those pointers in mind

I am planning to buy most (if not all) of the materials I need from either The Home Depot or Dixeline.

Keep in mind this is also my first time painting a case... I'm kind of a newbie, soo my apologies in advance for my lack of knowledge in this area

100 grit is a bit coarse, you would probably see scratches in your finish. If you want to start with 100 thats ok but then move up 220, 320, 400

no worries, we are all noobs once at everything

I dont claim to be a pro or know it all but I have learned a lot here since I started modding back in may. Thats why this place (OCN) is great, ask questions, learn something, try it, pass along your experiences (pay it forward)

Thanks for all the help CattleRustler! I took your advice and went out to The Home Depot today and picked up some of the supplies you recommended.

I bought a 320 grit block, and sandpapers that vary between 200 and 400 grit, 10 sheets. I also bought the paint you recommended. Even an employee at the store told me that it was great. I also got some painters tape, so I can tape down my case before I paint it.

As for the compressed air and rubbing alchohol, I have both. I have a neat little vacuum-type compressor that draws in or blows out air, and it's really powerful. Much more powerful than a can of compressed air. I also have a 90% Rubbing Alcohol solution which should be adequate enough for the job, I believe

I'm going to tape everything down tonight and get it prepared. Then tomorrow, I will sand it down and then paint it. (if the weather allows me to)

Thanks man!

you'll want to also get primer... its an undercoat to ensure that the color coat sticks to the surface well...

That should do you well. My paint job in my Antec 900 will probably be far inferior to yours. Good luck making that thing beautiful.

I was going to get a primer, but CattleRustler suggested that I could skip the primer step if I'd like because the Rustoleum Black Gloss paint was so good. An employee at the store also confirmed this because I had previously mentioned that I had a grey base coat, and the primer would be moderately irrelevant. Oh well, we will see what happens

I said you can skip CLEAR COAT (after painting)
but definitely prime it first

Yup, I painted everything today. And I did use a primer, haha

That paint is really awesome man. It looks so damn smooth and glossy. I love it!

Can't wait for it to dry so I can assemble the case, although I won't have anything to put in it for a couple of weeks

I didn't have a digital camera available, but I took some pics with my camera phone

The quality isn't great at all, and does not do the case justice, so i warn you, it looks A LOT better in person, but here you go:

Looks good from what I see, but yet I cant see much because the pics are all blurry and with no detail. Kinda like when your drunk and everything looks good LOL...

But seriously it looks great man from the looks of it.

So you sanded, primed, painted? Did you sand between priming and how many coats of each did you do? I am curious because I will be painting an Antec 300 soon. I plan on using that same paint, everyone has recommended it to me.
Are you asking brandon6199 or me ?
just read what cattlerustler said, it outlines it all.
