Current Status Of Build (08-02-09):

Well i have decided to build a computer case from scratch out of aluminium. Dimentions are 210*575*590.

The original plans... Very VERY rough.

FINALLY! got all my material.

First piece cut. many more to go yet.

Got all the peices cut now. Borrowing a die-grinder off the neighbour. Will be getting it this afternoon. Use it to clean up the edges very quick.

Any suggestions? Feel free but in your two cents. More to come soon.

Cheers, Smokie.

The neighbour never brought the di-grinder home so i guess i cant do much today.

Regarding cable mannagment, there is plenty of room between the front of the MOBO and the front on the case to hold all the cables. As you can see the deviding tray has grooves cut into it to feed the ide/sata/power cables trough.

A slidding MOBO tray sounds awsome...but... how exactly do i make on? I cant imagine it being an easy task. I have the room to do it. If you can find me a good set of plans for me than i supose i could give it a go.

You can make a sliding motherboard tray by incorporating "rails".

If you are using alum for the mobo panel itself, then you could use something similar that is thicker that will accept a cleft (needs to be thick enough to cut a groove.

OR - you could make a layered rail: 2 wider pieces that sandwich a narrower piece. This would yiled the same result.

ok... not to sure on what you mean but have an idea of what you are talking about. I was planning on using a MOBO tray out of an old case and fit it to this one. What about the back I/O pannel. How do i slide that out? wont the whole back pannel have to slide out with it?

Like This (Sold Out at the time of this Post
... sometimes these are very hard to get a hold of).

Since you are building your own, you can decide whether the assembly will slide in from the back (backplane panel sits flush outside), or slide in from the front (backplane panel sits flush inside).

If the motherboard tray and backplane are a single assembly, then Yes. The entire assembly will need to moce as one.

Additionally, since you have alleviated yourself from the constraints of standard case-architecture, you could configure the assembly any way you like insofar as insertion and removal.

Fair enough.

I wasn't really explicit enough... sorry.

The unit does not need to be as intricate or complicated, just similar in configuration.

If you are considering having the entire assembly "swing", then consider the shift of the center of gravity as the unit rotates through its arc (no offense it you already covered that issue).

Are you willing to share some design pics or drawings?

No worries. I have a spare today at school so i will do some up in paint (don't expect anything to flash. I could use CAD but i dont think i will have enough time today. The original plan had it swining from the back corner but now i will have it swing from the side so that the top pannel is a fixture to the case. I will have time this arvie to use the di-grinder (the nighbour droped over and lent it to me last night) and clean up the edges.

Will keep you all updated.

Well i had a bit of time to kill in my spare at school today so i jumped onto mechanical desctop 2008 and started doing some designs of the case so you can see how i want it to look when i am finished. I have not completed the moddeling so i cant to my views with dimentions (ie. front, side, top, isometric with dementions). But i took a couple of screen shots so you can see how i plan on it to turn out. I have not put the side pannel on, that is going to lift up. I found a place where i can buy struts form so i can have the side pannle pop up by a hydrolic. But i wont be buying/putting one on until it is completely finished.

Enjoy
