THIRD POST WILL HAVE ALL FINAL PICS

This started off as a simple build, but after seeing all the fairly epic paint jobs on the site I thought I'd try something a bit less imposing for my first case mod. From my suggestion thread we have the basic build:

The project will be divided into 5 phases:

Phase 1: Assembly
Phase 2: Paint
Phase 3: Overclock
Phase 4: Replace lighting
Phase 5: Cable Management

Today I was greeted by a happy sight as I walked in the front door:

The basic idea here is going to be a black case with yellow accents on the grilles and top of the case. Originally I was going to do it in reverse, with an overall yellow case with black accents, but I've decided that is just a little too loud for my main PC.

Here are a couple shots of my components and the out of the box case:

Since my heatsink isn't here yet, I went ahead and got the CPU lapped:

Home made lapping kit (thank you elliot's hardware!)

Stock CPU:

Before and after shots with the 600 grit and my poor sandpaper after getting the very uneven layer of nickel off:

And the final after some 2500 action (sorry it's blurry)

Here is the case 90% disassembled (the front is still on as well as the grilles on the HDD enclosures)

And here are the prepped grilles and the unprepped top that will be painted:

You'll notice one of my cats in the background getting ready to ninja attack the cords hanging from the case.

Also, for the mod. Paint like 5 of the 12 5.25" grilles yellow, and leave the others black. Then paint the top fan grill yellow and like the side mesh yellow. Just an idea!
Almost exactly what i was gonna do! I am also going to do some accents on the top piece just to break it up a little.

Yeah I probably should have tested the chip first... Oh well we'll see

Leave a few grills black, I think it would look cool. Someone did the same thing with an Antec 900 and only painted like 4 grills yellow and it looked cool. I would start out painting 5 and see how it looks. You can always paint more.

EDIT: I was writing my post at the same time you were. Glad to see you follow my advice lol.

Taped up the top of the case today, should get it painted soonish:

oh and here's my guys' paint shop, he does high end touch up and painting on cars like mbs, porsche, bentley, rolls, etc. so he has some of the best looking paint ever:

The final result on the side panels and top should look like a factory 8 layer paint job.

Had a minor disaster today with the top piece. I had just done the detail paint with a small brush, and as I was moving my paint reservoir (dixie cup) it leaked all over the top. Wouldn't you know it, my paint leaves some kind of chemical burn on the plastic so it can't be cleaned off. I sanded it down and will spray it back to black tomorrow, hopefully it works out.

I wet sanded the clear coat on the alum sides and taped it for the final yellow shot. Sides should be done tomorrow.

Let me tell you a little something about Antec signature PSUs.

Opening it is like a religious experience. It's like opening the box to a pair of new Ferragamos... The box was silky and smooth, the packaging immaculate. The feel of the PSU as I hefted it was like lifting a sacred artifact.

Yes it was more expensive, yes I probably could have had another very good PSU for a lot less, but DAMN it feels good to know it's in there.
