Project Reality is a free mod for BF2. It is an amazing mod for those who just can't stand the nade spamming / bunny hopping / general whoring.
Project Reality removes the HUD from the game. There is no more cross-hair. You actually have to "zoom" and use the iron sights to aim. There is no health meter, no ammo count. You have to keep track of that on your own. There is no "hit" mark on the screen when you shoot someone and no kill indicator across the screen when you land a kill. There are also no nametags, until you get real close... (and I mean close)
Bullets hurt a lot more in Project Reality. Headshots almost always kill. When you get headshot there is no "reviving." Typically you can take 2-3 bullets to the body, depending on the range and type of weapon. When you get shot, your health starts to bleed. It won't stop until you see a medic. You have small "first aid" packs that can help stop the bleeding, but typically unless you see a medic you will bleed to death. As your health gets lower and lower, you vision begins to blur. When you are shot, you can be revived by a medic. But when they revive you, you start out at very low health, and they have to heal you up back to 100%.
Medic only have enough battery for 6 defibrillator charges, after 6, they will need a new battery (just like your gun runs out of ammo). Riflemen (not support classes) carry ammo in PR. However, they only have 3 bags. Spend them well! Hummers and APCs also carry a limited amount of ammo. Vehicles cannot get ammo from ammo boxes. They can either get them from crates or a engineer vehicle (hummer with a bunch of ammo).
Kits. Kits are very important in PR. There are the basic kits that you spawn with, such as Special Forces, Rifleman, Medic, Light Anti-Tank, Anti-Personal, and Engineer. Then there are specialty kits, such as Officer, Marksman, Sniper, Heavy Anti-Tank, Support, Crew Member, Pilot, and Anti-Air. You must request kits from APCs, Tanks, Rally Points, and main flags. The type of kit you can get depends on where you are. For example, Heavy AT and Anti Air can only be obtained from the mainbase. Crewman kits can be obtained from APCs and Tanks, but within 100m of a flag you control. You must have a crewman kit to drive / shoot in an APC / Tank and you must have a pilot kit to fly. Only pilots have parachutes. Sniper / Marksman, Heavy AT, Anti-Air, and Support kits are limited. Only 2 Sniper, 2 Marksman, 2 Heavy AT, 1 Anti-Air, and 4 Support kits are available (in a 64 player server). Squad Leaders can select Officer kits.
Officer kits can place Rally Points. Rally points are mobile spawn points and provide ammo / health as well as a place to get advanced kits. In Project Reality, you do not spawn on flags, you spawn on Rally Points. Flags are important because of tickets, but not for their spawn value. Flags take forever to capture and require a minimum of 2 people on it to capture it. Also, you must capture flags in a pre-determined order. You cannot run to the back base and capture it.
Don't get out of moving vehicles. It hurts. Vehicles should be at a complete stop before getting out. Also, there is no F10, F11, F12 view. Only the inside view.
Command is an interesting role in PR. Commanders don't have UAVs or Sat Scans. They do have artillery (which respawn quite quickly) and supply crates and vehicle drops (which fall very slow). However, they can ONLY drop these is squad leaders request them.
In V.6 (Version .6) which will be released within the week, Commanders will be able to issue buckers and command posts.
Overall Project Reality is an amazing mod. They did so much better than EA on the maps. They are so much more complete. Give it a try. If you like teamwork and realism PR is the mod for you!
