Project REVENGE

Success is the best Revenge

Welcome to my first custom computer build. I have decided to take my competitive gaming one-step further! My outdated computer, and outstanding skills don't go together. It's time to make a new build, and tell my opponents to rage LESS. Success is the best Revenge.

Build
CoolerMaster Storm Scout
AMD X4 965 125w
ASUS Formula III
OCZ Platinum 4gb (PC12800)
XFX HD5770
WesterDigital CaviarBlack 500gb
Sony Optiarc
Samsung 2233RZ

Update 1: Waiting to finish purchasing a couple items, and waiting for a couple to get in.

I think I want to buy a CPU cooler before I get into crossfiring 2x5770s.

What cooler, and if needed what fans do you recommend?

I might do a motherboard change, but I want to ask before doing so....

ASUS M4A79T-Deluxe -> ASUS Formula III

I heard it has a sound card that it comes with it. Is this true?

If so will my Audio Technica ATH-700s take advantage of it? Or is this not a big enough gain to spend money on?

I don't even know the difference on the two boards, so please fill me in. I have purchased my G.Skill Ripjaw 4gb (PC12800) set, and wanted to know what it would OC best with.

I would avoid that power supply. Get a better unit like a Corsair. This great Antec 750W True Power is on a massive sale right now at Newegg.com:

By have do you mean you own the products, or just have them on your "to buy" list?

If you want to go all out with AMD look for the new C3 stepping Phenom II 965 for a processor. If you have to save money go with either a 720 or Athlon II 620.

For a Mobo definitely look for an AM3 only socket, no AM3/AM2+ mobos, because those use DDR2. The brands I would reccomend are Gigabyte and Asus.

Hmm well you guys don't think $204 (after MIR are cashed) for a XFX 5770 + OCZ ModXStream 700w is a good deal?

Keep in mind a 5770 = $180

Won't the PSU be good enough to CF a 5770? I know it's the most important part in my rig, but people are saying it's a quality build. I forgot who OCZ bought out, but the name had Power in it.

PC Power & Cooling, and the ModXStream is quite crappy to be honest. Not a solid PSU at all. It won't have too much trouble running a 5770, and at that price it's basically only $20 so go for it.

I know someone with the 550W Fatal1ty OCZ one (which is by all means 10x worse than the 750W ModXStream) and he can run a 4890 on it. A single 4890 probably consumes more power than two 5770s.

They bought Pc Power and Cooling. I think that PSU will be fine for crossfire 5770's, OCZ has become a pretty decent PSU company, Yes Corsair, Antec and Pc P&C are better, but I'd say OCZ is a close fourth.

I think, if you get the rebates, you have a great deal on your hands.

Yes, it was called Power & Cooling. For $24 bucks a 700w psu sounds phenomenal!

So if I see a 965 + mobo deal, I should hop on it right away?

I mean microcenter sells a 965 for the same price as a 955 on newegg.

There is no point for me to drive 1 hour to go to a microcenter, and 1 hour back to save $10.

Unless I am going with a i7 - 920 ($200) Foxconn Bloodrage GTi ($212) build.
Then I can go ahead and purchase 2x Scythe S-Flex 120mm fans + Proli Megahalems.

The thing is... I might sell my sig for $250 (the rig in my sig ofc) and use the money for a new case + hd + memory.

If you guys stay tuned, hopefully frys electronics can post up there newest offers for the 29th.

So I should most definately go for a X4? I really want this rig to play the new Battlefield BC2 dropping on March 2nd, but I don't know what is recommended for the game.

I'm so lost, and new... Can you guys throw out a couple specific good AM3 mobos. Just in case they do sell it at frys with the 965, I can grab it right away.

Thank you so much, it's always a great feeling when someone backs up a deal.

Yeah, but mine includes 4gb ddr3 too and it has 2 $20 mir which bring it down to $351.... and ummm yours is out of stock!

IMO if you find a Gigabyte or Asus AM3 board with at least 2 PCI-E slots, it's good, I have heard no issues with any of them.

How much do you have to spend on all of this anyway? if you give us a budget we can really help you into which parts would be best for you.

Oh, how long is this deal lasting for? And how many people also approve of this.

EDIT: This is even under my budget, meaning I can get a HAF922 case and a WD Caviar Black!
Oh I need an optical drive too, why not? haha!

Well.. what do you guys prefer. New gaming rig, will be using it for 2-3+ years.

Do I get a 965 or 955? There are two combo deals listed, and I would love to hear from everyone.

Thanks MrAMD_Fan you rock.

I would approve of this but it seems a little overkill for what he wants. I HIGHLY doubt he will ever use 4 PCI-E slots, especially with a 700W PSU.

EDIT: Well what is your budget? This will help us immensely.

I have exactly $500 to spend.

Keep in mind I might sell my current computer.. and I wanted to keep my old school 250gb WD, and my discontinued CoolerMaster mid-tower case.

But since the guy offered $250, I can use that for a optical drive/HD/case.

Win-win situation.

For mobo/cpu and even memory.. I have $500. I can boost that to $555, max.

PC Power and Cooling still make their own stuff. They are just owned my OCZ.

They make nothing but great products. I dont know why people are giving them bad rep. OCZ also makes decent psu's.

What about the $200 combo deal with the GPU/PSU? does that take away from that $500? If it doesn't you really don't have much of a limit, if it does you can still go pretty high with your parts.

I already have $350 budget for psu/gpu. I only spent $262, and that includes tax (I am waiting to cash in the 35 MIR, to make it $227)
So that is a gift from my uncle. He said he will help me out with another $100.

I have $350 saved up, so that's $450. I'm sure I can add another $105 to that budget.

So I have a total of $555 to spend on a CPU/Mobo/Memory

If this guy pays up for my rig, but he's broke... I will have another $250 added to my budget for a new case, optical drive, and hd.
See less See more
So what do you guys say:

With tax: $452 for a i7 920 + Foxconn Bloodrage GTI.
But I would have to spend $120 on air cooling.
$40 for 2x Scythe S-Flex fans, and $80 for a Proli Megahalems.

I would still need memory. =\\

I know this is the AMD section, but I don't mind bringing in Intel into the scene.

I just want to game, no rendering, and no movie watching.

I know I can save money and purcahse an optical drive, hd, and case.

So please keep in mind I have $555 for a cpu/mobo/and memory.

Pick up a 785 Chipset motherboard and AMD X3 720. Best bang for buck combo

I have the money to spend though, and I really wouldn't mind putting it to use. I could go the saving money route on the cpu. I FPS game, and GPU is the most important factor.. so that means I can have money to CF.

Not too sure, feel free to chime in. Frys hasn't posted up the combo deals, yet.
