Prove My Brother Can Build a PC for $400

1321 Views 21 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Pen
He's been convinced by my uncle that for $400 he can buy a pre-built computer with better parts than if he put it together himself. If you all would, could you help me prove him wrong?

He already has:
Graphics card - Nvidia GeForce 8600
Monitor
Keyboard and Mouse
2GB DDR2 on his current computer, an eMachine, so I doubt they would work in a custom-build. Just in case, here's the link.

He wants to run Windows 7. He's not in college yet, so he doesn't get the college discount.

Thanks for any and all response!

A pre-build computer will not come with Windows 7 and with 400$ u cant fit Windows 7 in there.

if he was a college student, I had a link where he could have gotten windows 7 home for 29.99 :/.. that college thing is sucking in his case.

This is what he found. $420 pre-built with Windows 7.

Yeah, I'm in college now but I can only use the deal one time and I plan on getting it for myself :-/.

This will wipe the floor with any prebuilt in the $400 range, granted I skimped on the case and you won't get any overclock out of that RAM, but you wouldn't be getting any overclock at all out of a pre-built. Honestly that 8600 is really starting to show its age, so I included a nice new 4670 in there as well.

You would need to pull the optical drive out of the current PC he has or buy another one, but I think its worth it.

AGGH its not letting me upload a picture anywhere, have to do it the ghetto way. I'll get links later.

Cough. Cough.

Edit: And no optical drive as you pointed out..

Ok. No floppy drive, acceptable. No optical drive? Really? What if the other computer is still going to be used?

You cant make these kind of assumptions.
Also yes I just realized there's no HDD, you'll have to include that or take it out of the previous. I assumed that the other computer wasn't going to be in use since he stated he could take the memory out of it. Pretty good assumption IMO.

Thanks Drackula!

Don't tear him down and not even have a build to go against his. So put up or shut up.

Motherboard and CPU $102.99
RAM and Video Card $141.98
Just refining some of the stuff Craiga35 listed, searched for combo deals
It's only 9 dollars cheaper than his though...
Plus an optical drive and Hard drive will bring you up another 81.98...which is a lot. I might be able to find some better deals there though. However, and this may not be what you want to hear, provided you don't see overclocking as an important part of a computer, You can occasionally find cheaper deals via a prebuilt system. The majority are vastly upmarked, but eh, it's not always true that building one yourself is cheaper. Someone else may be able to find better price/performance stuff than me and get you a better deal to prove your point.
Well if you buy used off of this forum, you could net a great deal. You could easily get a mobo, ram, and dual core CPU combo for around $200 off of here. Get a 4850 off of here for $80, then use the 120 for a cheap case, optical drive, and HDD. But there's a PSU left to buy as well as the OS. Your argument is looking weak lol.
Those cheap OEM things use PSU´s worth nothing and motherboards with exploding capacitors. Dont buy OEM. Even if its cheap.

Whats the point? It just needs a HD and DVD drive.

But even then, its around the same price as buying the prebuilt and buying a graphics card for it.

In any case.. My build would look similar to his, only with a HD and CD Drive.. He your buddy or something? lol.

Well technically he doesn't need a new graphics card, because he has the 8600 so he could take out the 4670 and buy a DVD and HDD. He actually doesn't even need RAM, from the 2GB he said he could use, so you can take that out if you want, as well. Thats plenty to buy a new Video card, a HDD and DVD Drive.

I've actually never even talked to the guy, I guess he's just polite, unlike somone.

kidding!

so then its like.. on par with the prebuilt anyways.. Its tough to outdue prebuilts sometimes (pretty much when theres a low budget)

And excuse me for not being offended mr. kidder

Not to mention it doesn't have a GPU...they surely use budget ram along with the budget mobo and PSU

The HDD could be lacking as well...if its not Seagate/WD or similar brand he could be getting a 750GB ticking time bomb

Excellent list, thanks a bunch. Dropping out that memory and gpu he can easily pick up a nice HDD. Also, I forgot to mention he'll be ripping the optical drive out of his old PC so he doesn't need to buy a new one.

Well he doesn't need memory, optical drive or gpu, but I'll look into the used stuff on the forums here. Could probably drop the total price by about $50 or so :)

Sounds great! Good luck with convincing him and with the build.

If he already has a video card, get a MATX 785G motherboard w/ a Athlon II.

Do not buy an OEM computer, they come w/ a cheap 300W PSU which will fail within a 6 months, a OEM motherboard w/ cheap capacitors and a horrid case. Don't get me started on the underclocked RAM.

Mhmmm

That one he has selected in the OP uses a whole 200W PSU...

the machine in my sig was in the 400$ range w/o os.
If he's in high school, perhaps he could check if his school is signed up for DreamSpark:

Yeah, I know Windows 7 isn't listed, but if you really need to stay under $400, Server 2008 R2 will do in a pinch.
