I don't use my PS3 for gaming very often mainly just DVDs,Blu rays and media server but I thought I would have another play through on Uncharted 3 and got about 5 to 10 minutes in and my PS3 Fan ramped up and was screamingly loud! This had happened in the past but for only a few minutes at really intense parts of Uncharted, killzone 3 or God of war but this didn't stop for about 45.

So I decided to open up the PS3 and clean out the Fan ect and I must say the PS3 (Fat) is well built and very simple to take apart but this did not resolve my problem after putting it back together and playing Uncharted for about 45 minutes this time the fan then ramped up again and was super loud.

So I took it apart again this time cleaning the GPU and CPU of the horrendously cheap thermal paste used and applied Arctic Silver 5 and played last night for about 3 hours and the Fan didn't even ramp up from level 1 to level 2 its a huge difference!

If you are having similar problems to me open your playstation give it a clean and it will run better than ever.

Hey man,

Yeah Sony screwed up when they did the initial build of the PS3, the overheating caused by crappy thermal paste caused the YLOD and the RLOD as well.

Stripping the PS3 down and then replacing the thermal paste is the best way to sort it out

*UPDATE*

So three hours into Uncharted 3 last night and the fan went back up to 100% and was doing my head in.

Taking three hours is still a huge improvement over 5-10 minutes with the previous thermal paste and collection of dust but still I was hoping the problem was gone.

I am going to elevate the PS3 slightly to allow more air to move underneath see if that makes any difference dunno if anyone is interested but ill keep updating for future people who may look into this issue.

yeah I've read so many reviews on the benefits of this but never bothered to do it myself because I didn't have thermal pads. Now I bought some thermal pads from china (still probs better than stock sony. Do you use paste on the cpu and gpu or thermal pads?

I used Arctic Silver 5 Thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and spread it evenly across the heat spreader. As the chips are so large it took quite a lot in comparison to doing it on a standard CPU or GPU but has been working much better.

I had a couple of rubber add-ons for a monitor riser and placed it under the PS3 last night so it added about an inch of a gap between the PS3 and my television stand shelf allowing the air to circulate under the PS3 better and I think this has resolved my issue.

Cleaning out the dust from the PS3, replacing thermal paste and adding risers underneath allowing for better airflow means I can now game without my PS3 sounding like a hoover.

I have seen a couple of add ons you can purchase one with 4 small fans that clips on to the front of the PS3 and a riser with 3 fans blowing air under the ps3 but I am hoping to avoid purchasing anything like that.
